POSITION TITLE: Support Services Technician

DEPARTMENT :Operating Room

Shift: Monday - Friday, 8:00am- 4:30pm

FTE: 1.0

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the direct supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse and Nurse Manager, Surgery, performs clerical duties, assists with scheduling, compiles statistics, facilitates surgery schedule, places patient charges, secretarial duties, tissue tracking log, and implant log record.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A. EDUCATION, TRAINING EXPERIENCE: Training and experience in general

secretarial functions. Will receive on-the-job training in specific duties. Must have thorough

understanding of the need for confidentiality. Previous medical secretary experience preferred.

B. KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES SKILLS: Accept the fact that the comfort, safety, and treatment of

patients promptly and courteously is the primary responsibility of all hospital personnel. Must be

familiar with policies and procedures relevant to job. Must have interpersonal relation skills. Typing and computer skills preferred. Must be able to read, write, and follow written and oral instructions. Must be familiar with policies and measures that are relevant to job. Must be able to communicate effectively with patients and staff and maintain good patient and public relations. Knowledge of medical terminology required.

JOB DUTIES:

RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS:

I. TECHNICAL/ADMINISTRATIVE/CLINICAL: (Total Weight of 100) Demonstrates competence in the skills, (processes, procedures, and equipment) necessary to carry out assigned duties as identified below.

A. Performs general secretarial duties as assigned.

1. Answers telephone and intercom and relays messages appropriately. Maintains confidentiality

in use of telephone and intercom.

2. Processes incoming mail and distributes appropriately.

3. Performs typing and filing duties; i.e. update preference cards.

4. Distributes inter-departmental information to appropriate personnel and posts announcements.

5. Compiles statistics and maintains accurate records, i.e. turnover times, QI records.

6. Checks computer printer frequently throughout shift for department messages.

7. Place patient charges within timely manner.

8. Checks patient charges against last word bill.

9. Reviews patient bill and edits account

10. Charge entry: Enters, edits and corrects charges procedures. Monitors charge entry process for accuracy on a daily basis.

B. Scheduling Activities

1. Communicates changes in schedule to pertinent departments.

2. Assists in scheduling duties as needed, ie. Add on cases.

3. Types and Distributes copy of surgery schedule via O.A. to appropriate departments.

4. Provides X-Ray Department with copy of following days schedule of needed films.

5. Assists in managing daily room utilization by maintaining operative schedule. Informs involved departments, staff and waiting areas of time.

C. Assists Nurse Manager in the organization of the Surgery front desk.

1. Orders stationary supplies and assists in maintaining unit/clerical stock supplies.

2. Monitors delays in surgical cases and informs Nurse Manager/Lead R.N. accordingly.

3. Maintains a quiet, orderly working environment in the Surgical Department.

4. Greets physicians, nurses, and other Operating Room visitors and provides directions.

5. Delivers Blood products, specimens, etc. if needed.

6. Ensures that staff, students, physicians, and visiting personnel receive a locker assignment.

7. Enter OR call schedule daily

8. Check account numbers for accuracy

9. Help transport patients when directed.

10. Translate charges from ORSOS to lastword

D. Meets educational requirements per policy.

E. OR case preparation.

1. Prints preference cards.

2. Pulls instruments for cases

3. Sets up cases when appropriate.

4. Orders equipment and special supply orders as necessary.

5. Prepare charts when necessary for next day.

6. Enter post case data

7. Enter Implant Log information for tracking proposes

8. Enter Tissue Log information for JCAHO requirement

9. Steris scopes/instruments when directed

10. Prevac/flash instruments when directed

11. Order tests/specimens requisitions when directed
