POSITION SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse (RN)-OB is a professional care giver who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time period. The RN provides patient care through psychomotor skills, utilization of nursing process, support services and supervision of and delegation to LPN's and UAP's (unlicensed assistive personnel). The RN completes all tasks/nursing interventions that require independent, specialized nursing knowledge, skill or judgment that cannot be delegated.

Neonate (birth-28 days), Adolescent (13-17 years), Adult (18-64), All populations

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Follows established policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.

2. Willing and able to demonstrate appropriate core competencies annually or as requested.

3. Completes a comprehensive assessment according to hospital policy.

4. Formulates a nursing diagnosis from assessment of patients' acute and chronic health problems.

5. Communicates effectively all patient assessment data with the healthcare professionals responsible for the patient.

6. Completes a written care plan for assigned patients and reviews and revises according to established nursing guidelines.

7. Provides the daily care of each patient assigned in compliance with the written care plan.

8. Assesses patient and patient representative's current learning needs and implements appropriate measures to meet knowledge deficits.

9. Demonstrates knowledge based in areas of, but not limited to, standards of care, practice and professional performance, policies and procedures, drugs, lab values and legal issues.

10. Serves on hospital committees and/or participates in QI activities as directed by the Department Manager.

11. Demonstrates self-directed learning and participates in continuing education; attend scheduled meetings.

12. Performs admitting procedures as regards to the obstetrical patient according to policy and procedure.

13. Demonstrates knowledge of induction procedures.

14. Demonstrates ability to perform in delivery room, birthing room and/or operating room.

15. Demonstrates ability to provide newborn care/screening procedures.

16. Demonstrates knowledge/skill to provide post partum care.

17. Demonstrates knowledge of aseptic techniques.

18. Demonstrates awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for personal professional growth.

19. Assists with orientation of new employees and staff development activities for the unit.

20. Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

21. Support the culture of service excellence throughout the organization.

22. Actively seek ways to demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and participate in professional development opportunities.

23. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

24. Completes annual educational requirements.

25. Understands and adheres to Bell's compliance standards as they appear in Bell's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.

Tasks to be performed when staff RN is assigned Charge function on a given shift:

Individual assigned to charge is responsible to assess, plan, direct and evaluate the delivery of care to all patients in the following areas:

1. Utilizing the AWHONN Staffing guidelines, assess the number and skill level of personnel needed to provide quality patient care in the department for the upcoming shift.

2. Assesses the efficiency and effectiveness of care provided on assigned shift and identifies problems with recommendations for improvement.

3. Directs/supervises others in the planning of patient care.

4. Facilitates all admissions and discharges of patients to the unit.

5. Activates all physician orders for patients on the unit.

6. Effectively directs staff during any emergency situation.

MINIMUM LEVEL OF REQUIRED PREPARATION AND TRAINING/POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Minimum: Graduate of a school of nursing.

Current license to practice as an RN in the State of Michigan.

Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

EXPERIENCE:

Preferred: One year of experience in an OB setting.

CREDENTIALS:*

Required: Valid RN license in the State of Michigan.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) Certification

Primary Source Verification: Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
