OPARC envisions a world where people with developmental, intellectual or other disabilities are valued members of our communities.  If you have a heart for helping others achieve a better life then the Adaptive Physical Education Trainer position may be right for you.  You will plan and develop exercise regimes and train staff on their implementation.  Some duties include:

  • Provide adapted physical education services to adults with intellectual disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic impairments or other disabling conditions.
  • Instruct participants, using adapted physical education techniques, to improve physical fitness, gross motor skills, perceptual motor skills, or sports and game achievement.
  • Maintain thorough records to document attendance, participation and progress, ensuring confidentiality of all records.
  • Provide participants positive feedback to encourage them and help them develop an appreciation for physical education.
  • Assess participant's physical progress or needs.
  • Prepare lesson plans in accordance with individualized education plans (IEP's) and the functional abilities or needs of participants.
  • Establish and maintain standards of behavior to create safe, orderly and effective environments for learning.
  • Provide individual or small groups of participants with adapted physical education instruction that meet desired physical needs or goals.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in planning and developing exercise regimes and training staff.  The adaptive physical education teacher will be certified by the National Consortium for Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities (NCPEID) and will have 10 or more years of experience working with the disabled population.  A degree in a related field is preferred.  Safe reliable transportation and insurance is required.  Must pass a background check.
