Job Summary UM-Dearborn is among the top-tier comprehensive public universities in the Midwest with 9,100 students, outstanding faculty and staff as well as beautiful facilities and grounds. UM-Dearborn was first created as the Dearborn Center of the University of Michigan in 1959. Ford Motor Company gave the University of Michigan approximately 200 acres, including beautiful grounds along the Rouge River in Dearborn, as well as $6 million to build the campus' first four buildings. The campus was initially established with an emphasis on cooperative education. In 1971, it became a four-year undergraduate school; with some master's level graduate programs. Since then, the campus has experienced steady growth in both enrollment and in range of programming to include undergraduate, graduate and doctoral-level programs.

Responsibilities* Prepare and paint interior and exteriors surfaces of buildings, structures and fixtures. This work includes but is not limited to: staining, priming, caulking, surface prep, painting, and applying protective barriers for interior and exterior facilities, equipment, and appurtenances for UM-Dearborn.

*Repair surfaces before painting; fill holes and cracks with putty or patching plaster; repair and/or replace small areas of drywall.

*Select, mix and blend paint to meet color, consistency, surface composition, and durability criteria.

*Roll or brush paint onto interior or exterior surfaces, including walls, trim, machinery, furniture, cabinets, smokestacks, and structural steel work.

*Finish new furniture or refinish old furniture, including desks, chairs, cabinets and their components, alternating spray application of stain, varnish, lacquer or shellac with a sanding or buffering operation.

*Hang wallpaper.

*Remove wallpaper using steam unit.

*Prepare surface for painting by washing, scraping, brushing, sanding and sealing.

*Cut, fit, install and seal glass in windows and doors.

*Hang or lay drop cloth to protect against dripping and splashing.

*Clean rollers, brushes and other equipment.

*Erect scaffolding and ladders.

*Instruct and direct the work of assistants.

*Prepare records and service reports to materials and time expended.

Required Qualifications* *Graduation from high school or equivalent work experience.

*Reasonable recent experience in the painting of interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and structures.

*Considerable knowledge of the equipment, methods, and materials used in brush and roller painting.

*Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

*Ability to work from ladders and scaffolding.

*Reasonable manual strength and dexterity.

*Skill in the preparation and painting of interior and exterior surfaces.

*Ability to tape and finish, coat, and perform drywall repairs/replacement.

*Ability to carry tools, push work cart, and walk long distances in large university complex.

Desired Qualifications* *Five years of commercial and/or industrial experience.

*Ability to maintain tact and professionalism when working directly with internal and external customers of the university in matters of work, scheduling of projects, and general day-to-day communications.

*Willingness to adjust shift to meet the requirements of customers and the University.

*Experience with all types of wall-coverings such as vinyl, fabric, etc.

*Experience in estimating time and materials for painting and other related projects.

*Experience with special coatings such as Zolotone, Polymix, epoxy coatings, etc.

*Experience with the set up and working with ladders and scaffolding.

*Experience with the operation of aerial lifts (scissor lift, JLG's, etc.).

*Experience with staining and finishing of new wood surfaces and the refinishing of existing wood surfaces.

*Experience operating all equipment necessary for spray-painting applications, and a working knowledge of other paint/protective coating applications, equipment, and processes.

*Experience installing fire stopping materials.

*Experience in preparation and application of industrial coatings on steel structures, piping, valves, etc.

*Experience working in confined spaces.

*Ability to mix, match, harmonize, and contrast colors.

*Ability to cut, fit, install, and seal glass in windows and doors.

Work Schedule This position is an afternoon shift, from 12:00 pm - 8:30 pm.
