POSITION SUMMARY:

The RN-ACU is a Professional care giver who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time period. The RN provides patient care through psychomotor skills, utilization of nursing process, support services and supervision of and delegation to CNAs. The RN also completes all tasks/nursing interventions that require independent, specialized nursing knowledge, skill or judgment that cannot be delegated.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Follows established policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.

2. Willing and able to demonstrate appropriate core competencies annually or as requested.

3. Completes a comprehensive assessment according to hospital policy.

4. Formulates a nursing diagnosis from assessment of patients' acute and chronic health problems.

5. Communicates effectively all patient assessment data with the healthcare professionals responsible for the patient.

6. Completes a written care plan for assigned patients and reviews and revises according to established nursing guidelines.

7. Provides the daily care of each patient assigned in compliance with the written care plan.

8. Assesses patient and patient representative's current learning needs and implements appropriate measures to meet knowledge deficits.

9. Demonstrates knowledge based in areas of, but not limited to, standards of care, practice and professional performance, policies and procedures, medications, lab values and legal issues.

10. Serves on hospital committees and/or participates in QI activities as directed by the Department Manager or designee.

11. Demonstrates self-directed learning and participates in continuing education; attends scheduled meetings.

12. Demonstrates awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for personal professional growth.

13. Assists with orientation of new employees and staff development activities for the unit.

14. Demonstrates knowledge of I.V. Therapy.

15. Demonstrates knowledge of aseptic technique while performing procedures/obtaining lab specimens.

16. Demonstrates understanding and maintenance of standard precautions and isolation techniques.

17. Demonstrates skills in performance of pre and/or post operative procedures.

18. Demonstrates knowledge regarding wound and skin care.

19. Demonstrates knowledge of patient care needs regarding the adolescent and/or adult patient (13 years and older).

20. Demonstrates understanding of patient care needs of the geriatric patient.

21. Demonstrates knowledge of patient care needs regarding pediatric patient (0-12 years of age).

22. Demonstrates skills and knowledge of patient care needs regarding critical care patient.

23. Responsible for assuring monitors are completed as assigned.

24. Abides by Nursing Service Behavior Standards.

25. Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

26. Support the culture of service excellence throughout the organization.

27. Actively seek ways to demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and participate in professional development opportunities.

28. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

29. Completes annual educational requirements.

Tasks to be performed when staff RN is assigned Charge function on a given shift:

Individual assigned to charge is responsible to assess, plan, direct and evaluate the delivery of care to all patients in the following areas:

1. Based on acuity, assess the number and skill level of personnel needed to provide quality patient care in the department for the upcoming shift.

2. Assesses the efficiency and effectiveness of care provided on assigned shift and identifies problems with recommendations for improvement.

3. Directs/supervises others in the planning of patient care.

4. Facilitates all admissions and discharges of patients to the unit.

5. Effectively directs staff during any emergency situation.

MINIMUM LEVEL OF REQUIRED EDUCATION/POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Minimum: Current license to practice as an RN in the State of Michigan

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) completion.

Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Completion.

Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

EXPERIENCE:

Preferred: One year experience in an acute care setting.

CREDENTIALS:*

Required: Registered Nurse.
