Job Summary: This position is responsible for performing echocardiography exams according to imaging protocols, both in main echo suite, as well as bedside and in other areas, such as the cardiovascular lab. Maintains accurate records and files and ensures equipment is properly maintained. Helps with support/clerical functions, such as greeting patients. jAssists with patient preparation and education. Position may assist in other departments or locations, as needed.

* Education: Graduate from echocardiography program or ultrasound program with echocardiography cross-training.

* Experience: If a graduate of echocardiography program, experience is helpful, but new graduates are welcome. If a graduate of an ultrasound program, minimum one year experience prior to cross-training in echo. Recognition of cardiac arrhythmia's and cardiac structures is required.

* Licensure/Certification/Registration: Must be registered or registry eligible (registered within 1 year of employment or cross-training); Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Cardiovascular Technologist (RCVT) certification. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from approved American Heart Association training center must be obtained within 90 days of employment.

* Equipment: Safely operate echocardiography systems; radiology information system (RIS) and picture archive communication system (PACS).

* Skills: Must be able to evaluate information and relate effectively and professionally. Must be able to communicate well, both verbal and written. Computer skills required including HMS and PACS.

Essential Job Functions:

* Performs inpatient, outpatient and emergent echocardiography exams, including portable procedures.

* Follows established customer service guidelines during all interactions with others. Communicates in a highly respectful and courteous manner to all internal and external customers.

* Clearly communicates patient information relative to procedure purpose, description and duration to patient/family prior to beginning examination. Follows up on patient's questions in a timely manner.

* Assembles patient and order information for diagnostic testing accurately and efficiently.

* Measures and calculates cardiac dimensions according to accepted procedure in an accurate manner.

* Demonstrates ability to recognize a diagnostic scan and significance of structures visualized.

* Prepares necessary paperwork for physician interpretation of echo exams.

* Ensures prior patient records, as appropriate, are available for physician exam interpretation.

* Assist s scheduling staff as needed with outpatient appointments in a positive and team-oriented manner.

* Cleans equipment routinely in an appropriate manner.

* Follow isolation procedures and cleans equipment appropriately after completion of exam.

* Maintains a safe and orderly work environment.

* Ensures that equipment is in good working order, making sure that probes and other devices are safely secured.

* Reports equipment malfunctions to coordinator, manager or director promptly and initiates service call, as appropriate.

* Uses Picture Archive Communication System (PACS) and HMS appropriately. Enters all order, clinical and charge data accurately, completely and timely.

* Uses all HMS and other computer applications according to hospital and security guidelines.

* Follows departmental PACS guidelines for processing, annotating, documenting (i.e. tech notes) and archiving electronic image data.

* Performs pre-procedure phone calls to outpatients, as assigned.

Performs clerical/support tasks as needed or assigned.
