POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT/MLS) is responsible for working within the established guidelines of the Laboratory Department as assigned. As a professional, the MT/MLS is responsible for carrying out the philosophy and objectives established by the Board of Directors and the Management Team. Foremost among these responsibilities are strictly adhering to detail in the technical performance of laboratory procedures, solving practical and analytical problems, resolving conflict, and implementing constructive change.

Education: Bachelors degree in related field or graduate of an accredited Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist program. Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or categorical ASCP certification in a laboratory specialty/subspecialty as applicable to job responsibilities.

Must be MT or MLS (ASCP) certified or eligible.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The MT/MLS is responsible for providing timely and effective services to all customers of the Laboratory, assuring that the professional and technical process is carried out. Customers include all age groups of patients, from neonates to geriatrics.

The MT/MLS:

Performs careful and accurate work in any technical area as assigned.

Performs tests within specified turnaround time for assigned area.

Assures that QA guidelines are strictly adhered to before reporting any laboratory result.

Complies with methodologies, procedures and services in consultation with the assigned laboratory supervisor.

Participates in performing and documenting routine instrument maintenance as assigned.

Participates in problem resolution and instrument troubleshooting.

Documents all necessary information in the performance of technical procedures, including QC.

Reviews and/or writes procedures as requested.

Draws legal alcohol specimens.

Has appropriate training and performs capillary, venous and arterial blood collections from all age groups, including neonates to geriatrics, as needed.

Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in following protocol for patient, sample, and aliquot identification and labeling.

Is responsible for executing and monitoring technical practices in order to meet necessary standards, recommendations and requirements of voluntary and government agencies (ie. CAP, JCAHO, CLIA).

Demonstrates knowledge of computer programs as assigned by area.

Attends inservices, on the job training, and continuing education programs to meet developmental needs and keep abreast of new technologies.

Possesses ability and makes good independent decisions based upon knowledge of the overall functions, policies, and procedures of the assigned area.

Understands and adheres to all safety practices while performing duties to minimize any risk of injury and/or exposure to biohazardous material.

Communicates with the department supervisor as necessary when problems or unusual circumstances arise and documents as necessary.

Greets all customers, including patients, donors, physicians and other hospital personnel, with a pleasant and professional manner and appearance.

Provides professional leadership, motivation and guidance to peers and other laboratory staff.

Is able to prioritize work appropriately and assists others as time and workload allows.

Promotes the development, preparation, implementation and attainment of departmental goals, policies and projects.

Communicates effectively inter- and intra-departmentally with other healthcare professionals and customers to provide accurate, timely information and to reduce problems and minimize exceptions.

Works in consultation with department supervisor to assure services are consistent with the needs of the medical staff.

Assists in maintaining a high quality and well-organized Clinical Laboratory Science Program in Medical Technology in assisting with student clinical and/or didactic instruction as necessary.

Assures adequate supplies are available and utilized in a cost effective manner. Notifies supervisor when supplies need to be ordered.

Is aware of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs

(e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.

Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospitals commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.

Demonstrates behavior consistent with Trinitys Standards of Behavior and AIDET practice.

Performs other duties as assigned.
