Job Summary

Collaborates with diverse stakeholder groups, and functions as the FHS point-person, in all aspects of the life cycle of clinical information systems implementation to transform the FHS's clinical practices in accordance with strategic business objectives. Serves as a liaison between clinicians and IT professionals to facilitate a common understanding of the clinical standards and process improvement activities across multidisciplinary teams throughout the lifecycle of clinical systems implementations and maintenance activities. Ensures that organizational needs are adequately addressed, business objectives represented and that decisions regarding system development/process changes are viable for the FHS culture/environment. Works in partnership with leadership and staff to translate clinical requirements into specifications for nursing and clinical information systems; evaluates the impact the information systems have on user workflow; identifies workflow and process changes that will enhance the use of nursing and clinical information systems; ensures existing and future information systems facilitate clinical practice, delivery of safe patient care and are consistent with clinical practice standards. Additional duties include; supporting the training team in identifying and providing training planning, coordination and implementation of clinical documentation projects; working with the MBO team(s) dedicated to information systems design, build, testing and training activities, and the phased implementation of the new system.

Acts as a supporter and change agent for hospital leaders and clinicians to ensure maximum benefit of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and compliance with federal and state regulations; conveys information regarding the system and its impact on existing standards, processes and forms in such a way as to gain consensus for new ways of doing business and support to effectively implement those decisions.

Incumbents are also accountable for; maintaining up-to-date knowledge of trends and advances in the field of Nursing and Healthcare Informatics, as well as new developments in hardware and software technology; maintaining up-to-date knowledge of nursing practices, regulatory standards, and organizational direction.

Business travel, up to two weeks per month, may be required during peak project activity.

Essential Duties

* Participates in strategic planning related to future direction of nursing and clinical Information Systems.

* Participates in interdisciplinary process improvement teams to identify potential improvements in the current use of the systems and potential future uses of the information systems.

* Ensures existing and future information systems facilitate clinical practice, delivery of safe patient care and are consistent with clinical practice standards.

* Meets frequently with FHS nursing and clinical leadership to identify and discuss performance improvement opportunities to be addressed through information systems project.

* Identify and investigate industry "best practices" with regard to information systems implementations, and arrange conference calls and site visits as warranted; translate industry "lessons learned" into tactical guidelines.

* Develops and manages the project activities for clinical tasks relating to assigned information systems project(s); identifies timelines, deliverables, milestones and appropriately escalates issues that may compromise project timelines, goals, or budget.

* Works in partnership with leadership and staff to translate nursing requirements into specifications for nursing information systems.

* Review FHS's design-to-date of clinical documentation processes and workflows, and make suggested improvements as needed.

* Organize and lead FHS's effort in analyzing, documenting and redesigning nursing and clinical workflows, relative to information systems implementations.

* Identifies workflow and process changes that will enhance the use of nursing and clinical information systems; evaluates the impact the information systems have on user workflow.

* Provide content expertise around clinical regulatory and compliance issues; translate compliance challenges into automated rules/alerts/reminders that can improve compliance and patient safety.

* Effects the standardization of clinical data, nursing documentation, and nursing workflow/practices across the MBO.

* Participates in the development of project scope, timelines, clinical data standards, and electronic form design principles and guidelines. Develops and evaluates standards, procedures, processes, and automated tools that support the practice of nursing through the access and management of clinical data.

* Maintains on-going user communication and provides continuous project reports.

* Provides status reports throughout the design, build, testing and implementation phases; makes formal progress reports and communicates status, issues and actions taken to manager, senior leadership, medical staff, clinical leadership and other interested parties; makes verbal and written presentations to project teams and management.

* Develops and evaluates the effectiveness of communication tools and processes.

* Assures user competency and obtain information on usage of the system and workflow concerns through established, regularly scheduled rounds in the facility.

* Plans and delivers education/training required for implementation of system go-live.

* Works with staff and physicians to optimize the usage of clinical systems through education and training, quality outcomes, and providing support in accordance with organizational goals.

* Assures educational support for information systems users to help them function to their highest possible level; assists with inventory, design, and building of relevant Job Aids; performs in-service for the users.

* Performs related duties as required.

Education & Experience

* Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or related field, and a minimum of five years' work experience in acute care clinical nursing, including three years in a leadership role (i.e. Nurse Manager, Clinical Resource Nurse, Clinical Specialist, Nursing Supervisor). Direct work experience involving the implementation and use of clinical information systems is strongly preferred.

* Advanced education in the field of medical informatics is preferred.

License & Certification

* Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Washington State Board of Nursing.

* Certification in Nursing Informatics from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is desirable.
