Job Summary:

Supervises the activities of all nursing units, ensuring that established procedures and standards are followed. Adjusts unit staffing, assigns patients to rooms, serves as a resource person for hospital staff persons, physicians, and the public. Coordinates the activities of nursing units and provides necessary support to the nursing staff to assure that quality nursing care is provided.

Provides support to the Nursing Directors and nursing staff by supervising and evaluating the nursing care given to patients aged neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric in the nursing areas.

Essential Duties:

* In the absence of the Nursing Director, supervises and coordinates activities of Nursing personnel to maintain continuity for around-the-clock nursing care. Supervises Nursing staff in the provision of nursing care, interpreting hospital and department policies. Communicates observations to unit managers regarding individual staff members' performances, and the unit's effectiveness in delivering nursing care. Assists in supervising other departments' operations related to patient care in the absence of department directors.

* Regularly visits nursing units to oversee nursing care, ascertain condition of patients, and to assure patient needs are met. Initiates and/or participates in studies to ensure that quality patient care services are being provided consistently.

* Advises and assists nurses in administering unfamiliar or unusual therapies. Gives advice for treatments, medications, etc. in accordance with medical staff and nursing and hospital policies and procedures.

* Utilizes the Care Value System to evaluate staffing needs for current and on-coming shift and reassigns personnel to nursing units in accordance with patient acuity on each unit. Utilizes the TeamStepps tools to facilitate excellent communication.

* Assigns rooms according to patient care needs for new admissions and transfers patients between units when necessary.

* Obtains necessary supplies and equipment for staff to perform their work in the absence of other departmental personnel, i.e., supplies/equipment from S.P.D., Laundry, or Dietary following each department's policies.

* Prepares or delegates the preparation and compilation of data, records and reports which reflect shift operations (e.g. administrative supervisor's report, daily editing of the Car Value System, NORS information, etc).

* Directs others in accordance with established standards during emergencies (e.g., tornadoes, Code Blue). Checks to ensure others are providing needed services.

* Identifies, analyzes, and assists in resolving work-related problems of nursing staff.

* Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related seminars, conferences and the like.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

1. Knowledge of nursing theory, and practice, to direct and perform patient care as normally acquired through successful completion of an accredited school of nursing.

2. Current Nebraska license as a registered nurse required.

* After 2 years of employment, strongly encouraged to pursue certification in specialty area.

* After 2 years of employment, encouraged to pursue BSN degree (if an ADN or Diploma RN)

3. Up to three years clinical nursing experience with progressively more responsible related work experience (i.e., charge nurse responsibilities) to be able to provide guidance to others in providing nursing care and to be knowledgeable at administrative and nursing policies and procedures.

4. Analytical skills necessary to organize and supervise staff members, identify and respond to needs of nursing operation, and to administer hospital policies and procedures.

5. Interpersonal skills necessary to discuss and resolve patient care problems; counsel subordinate staff regarding performance; discuss patient care with physicians, other hospital personnel, and outside agencies.

6. Walking and standing up to 80% of work time, lifting up to 50 pounds for up to 10% of work time when moving equipment, assisting in patient positioning and so forth.
