Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Emergency Department Unit Director, the Emergency Department Unit Support Assistant/Monitor Tech performs clerical, secretarial and monitor tech duties inherent in the operation of the ED. The Unit Support Assistant/Monitor Tech works in an area of intense varied activity, which at times can be very stressful. The Unit Support Assistant/Monitor Tech must be able to keep calm and maintain a high level of efficiency regardless of surrounding distractions.

Essential Duties:

Notifies admitting of change in patient status, admit or transfer.

Acts as a receptionist for the Unit; politely and professionally answers all calls "Emergency Department, How may I help you?", and routes to the appropriate person. Takes accurate messages and ensures that these messages reach the appropriate person.

Admits patient onto central monitor; prints rhythm strips and posts to the appropriate chart; notifies RN or appropriate staff member of status changes on the monitor, rhythm changes, and abnormal vital signs.

Acknowledges and silences monitor alarms in a timely manner and follows up with appropriate staff member when appropriate as above.

Acts as a communication liaison between other departments, physician offices, and patients' families dispensing information as directed.

Transcribes physician orders accurately. Accurately orders labs, imaging, diet and test for all patients

Coordinates the transfer of patients to another facility, including completion of necessary transfer forms and log.

Consults with and keeps Supervisor informed of activities, needs, and problems related to the nursing area.

Organizes desk flow (i.e. xrays, charts, lab results).

Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintains good intradepartmental and interdepartmental relationships.

Contacts outside physicians when requested by Emergency Department RNs and/or physicians.

Maintains the Emergency Department logs.

Prepares requisitions for diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients as directed and coordinates appointments with respective departments.

Facilitates scheduling of follow-up outpatient procedures.

Utilizes computer order entry to implement lab, radiology, and dietary orders.

Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information.

Performs clerical duties related to procedures (i.e. admissions, discharges, transfers, deaths).

Notifies Nursing Coordinator or appropriate department of patient disposition; assembles and prepares appropriate charts and forms.

Files Emergency Department reports; maintains previous ED records.

Notifies Security of POH arrivals to the department.

Communication liaison between EMS, 911 Dispatch, & Police Officers.

License/Certification:

Current arrhythmia certification within three months of hire date and updated annually.

Experience:

Medical terminology required.

Ability to work in a high volume and fast paced environment required.

Ability to multi-task and prioritize while remaining efficient and effective.

Must be organized and pay close attention to detail in order to ensure accuracy.

Must be computer literate.

Education:

High school diploma or GED required.
