Job Summary:

Works with the nursing staff and physicians as a team member in coordinating and providing support of departmental operations related to clinical and clerical needs. Responsible for coordinating communications with the ED and Inpatient Services. Offers support to staff when guidance and problem solving skills are needed.

Essential Duties:

* Assists RN with admission and dismissal of patients; checks and records vital signs.

* Prepares patients for physician exam; under direction of the RN, washes, shaves, and//or disinfects the appropriate area; assists physician/PA in pelvic exams.

* Cleans and sets up examination rooms; requisitions and stocks supplies.

* Answers the telephone calls; forwards triage calls to the RN. As directed, contacts on-call physician and ancillary departments; exhibits proper telephone etiquette; displays professional standards of conduct when dealing with patients, departments, other facilities, and other health care personnel.

* Assists RN in auditing ER records to ensure they have been filled out accurately and completely.,

* Records appropriate data on log book, and other forms as required for proper documentation. Prepares requisitions for services such as lab/x-ray, etc.

* Prepares specimens for transport to the laboratory

* Maintains flexibility in the published work schedule in order to accommodate emergencies and schedule changes.

* Participates in housekeeping activities when Housekeeping department is not staffed.

* Serve on committees to ensure proper development in ED/Inpatient services, as needed.

* Maintain a level of education required and recommended for the position.

* Collaborate with departments/councils to develop and maintain orientation checklist, as appropriate.

* Maintain current phone numbers for local EMS providers.

* Maintain or post "on-call" schedules, physicians and staff.

* Respond appropriately to the emergency radio and relay reports to RN/physician.

* Process data entry of physician orders and other patient reports.

* Maintain current data on patient; chart results.

* Responsible for knowledge and maintain competency on the Cardiac Alert protocol, documenting pertinent information in the cardiac logs and/or assist in such emergency as per scope of practice.

* Responsible for knowledge and maintain competency on the Stroke Alert protocol, documenting pertinent information in stroke logs and/or assist in such emergency as per scope of practice.

* Responsible for knowledge and maintain competency on the Trauma Alert protocol, documenting pertinent information in trauma logs and/or assist in such emergency as per scope of practice.

* Request medical records from HIM and/or other facilities as needed/requested by physicians.

Hours: Combination of 12 and 8 hour shifts working in ER and Med/Surg

Education and/or Experience:

* EMT preferred, or at least one year of experience as a nursing assistant.

* Current BLS certification.

* High School degree or equivalent.

* Good office skills

* C.N.A. certification preferred.

* The ability to read, comprehend and follow verbal and/or written instructions.

* Able to perform a variety of activities characterized by change and short duration in caring for all patients.

* Can adapt to working with ill people.

* General good health with moral and ethical character.

Skills/Knowledge:

* Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

* Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

* Familiar with special terminology such as medical terms.

* Must have good interpersonal relationship skills.

* Able to operate equipment and tools relevant to the position.

* Basic computer skills.
