GENERAL SUMMARY:

Supports the Cath Lab staff by providing direct patient care as assigned. This technician is responsible for providing care for patients of diverse ages. Maintains all supplies in set-up room. Assists with maintaining and monitoring all other inventory supplies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Maintains all aspects of patient confidentiality.

* Assists patient with elimination needs bedpans, urinal. Empties urinary catheter bags. Observes and maintains urinary drainage systems.

* Transfers patient to/from bed, wheelchair using correct equipment. Transports patients to and from Cath Lab. Maintains all aspects of patient safety.

* Assists patient with ambulation.

* Answers patient call lights and responds appropriately.

* Performs special procedures including positioning and maintaining patient in correct and safe alignment; measuring and recording temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure; measuring and recording height and weight.

* Performs and transmits 12-lead EKG.

* Performs post-mortem care.

* Performs or assists with CPR.

* Performs bedside glucose testing.

* Sets up procedure trays using aseptic technique. Maintains cleanliness of procedure carts.

* Performs pre-procedure shave, scrub/prep and draping for all Cath Lab diagnostic and interventional procedures using aseptic technique.

* Assists with room preparation for anticipated procedures.

* Communicates changes/information regarding patient's physical/mental condition to RN.

* Complies with OSHA, JCAHO and other regulatory agency recommendations and guidelines.

* Responsible for ordering all disposable supplies and maintaining adequate supply levels in set-up room. Participates in monitoring expiration dates of supplies.

* Checks in supply carts and distributes to appropriate locations.

* Checks in stock medications daily and distributes to each procedure room.

* Maintains organization of Cath Lab holding area -puts away scrubs, return wheelchairs, carts, etc.

* Attends mandatory meetings.

* Participates in departmental performance improvement activities.

* Utilizes hospital information system to process orders.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

* Maintains supply of portable oxygen tanks.

* Performs intermittent pulse oximetry checks; documents and/or reports value appropriately. Performs urethral catheterization (intermittent and indwelling).

* Collects and labels specimens: blood/urine samples.

* Sets up and operates selected pieces of equipment.

* Monitors EKG rhythm and notifies RN of changes.

* Performs 12 lead EKG as ordered.

* Monitors patient while transporting out of unit for procedures; notifies RN if patient condition or rhythm changes.

* Performs oral, ET and trach suctioning.

* Removes arterial and CVP lines.

* Assists patients with transfers, ambulation and activities of daily living, using assistive devices.

* Successfully completes MLMH Bedside EKG monitoring course.

* Prepares and maintains equipment for use -battery insertion and paper loading.

* Prepares patient skin and applies electrodes.

* Participates in selected research endeavors, as outlined in protocols established by the study.

* Sets up and operates glucometer and charge for patient changes, cleans glucometer.

* Check defibrillator(s) according to established competency.

* Notifies Biomedical Engineering with equipment problems.

* Communicates all arrhythmias to the R.N.

* Performs efficiently in emergency situations.

* Answers phones, printing faxes for patient, families and doctors.

* Practices effective communication skills in answering phone, utilizing paging systems and acting as receptionist.

* Assists in maintaining tine film storage system -pulls and files, tine films as needed. Sends films to outside sources as appropriate. Assists in printing/distributing computer reports as needed.

* Able to demonstrate proper use of computer terminals, printer, addressograph, communication systems equipment, fax machine, lab printer, pneumatic tube system and special equipment found in assigned area. Assists in ancillary areas as needed.

* Transcribes physicians orders using appropriate forms and with accurate order entry. Maintains patient log and lists of admissions, discharges and transfers into the daily logbook.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Completion of 75-hour or 120-hour Certified Nursing Assistant Program.

Must be on State CNA Registry

* High school diploma or GED

* 18 years of age

* Familiar with aseptic and sterile technique

Basic life support competency required within 6 months of employment
