Perioperative Services

The Operating Rooms provide services for inpatients, outpatients, and same-day surgery patients, predominantly adults, but with some pediatric outpatients. The average census is 2,000 per month. The SLEH Operating Room is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Staffing provides at least one circulator and one scrub per case.

MAIN O.R. (In Patient OR)

Consists of 21 rooms located on the 2nd floor, adjacent to the yellow elevators. This area is divided into two sections: Section A and Section B. It serves General, Gyn, Ortho, Neuro, ENT, Plastic, and Urology services.

Job Summary

The major responsibilities are in providing leadership and communication, monitoring the work environment, assuring quality, managing the fiscal budget, managing human resources and ensuring the delivery of competent clinical practice.

Essential Duties

1. Facilitates staff to assume leadership roles, both formally and informally, via role modeling.

2. Demonstrates positive leadership skills and communication that embrace change, which results in achievement of outcomes.

3. Articulates departmental goals and objectives which allows staff to actively participate in clinical decision-making affecting practice.

4. Facilitates the achievement of a high quality work environment by addressing the needs of the department.

5. Ensures that appropriate equipment and supplies are available to provide effective and efficient nursing care.

6. Participates in unit, service and divisional CQI/CQE programs, documents results, reports by deadlines, and formulates corrective action plans for improvement.

7. Meets established research-based standards of care, quality control targets, and Leads quality improvement projects.

8. Develops a multidisciplinary program to monitor quality patient care indicators.

9. Maintains a consistent score of fair to good on selected department items on customer service survey. Uses corrective action plans to address deficiencies in customer satisfaction that pertains to the department.

10. Develops and reviews Departmental Policies and Procedures.

11. Participates in chart review audits.

12. Maintains fiscal budget within established targets, overtime, orientation costs, SSP costs and medical supply costs.

13. Adjusts staffing patterns according to unit activity and patient acuity.

14. Reviews fiscal Worksheet, analyzing variances and implementing appropriate action plans.

15. Develop and manage the unit budget to control operational and capital expenditures for capital equipment priorities based on patient unit needs and according to budget policy. Ensures the availability for outpatient departmental supplies in accordance with established department par levels.

16. Identifies major hospital cost savings opportunities that are measurable.

17. Identifies new revenue-producing opportunities for the hospital.

18. Shared leadership in place with structured recruitment, retention and professional practice.

20. Facilitates professional growth and development of staff utilizing career development plans. Identifies staff career development and training needs. Uses CQI/CQE and staff input for development of educational programs.

21. Demonstrates accountability for human and material resource management with division guidelines and standards by monitoring, and correcting variances for productive and non-productive utilization.

22. Complies with personnel policies and procedures, follows guidelines and conducts effective performance interviews. Ensures that job standards are understood by employees.

23. Oversees orientation of all new employees. Evaluates orientation process effectiveness and employee progress during orientation. 6.Ensures that payroll is accurate and timely.

24. Participates in pilot studies, research projects that effect patient care.

25. Membership in a professional organization, (i.e. specialty or administration).

26. Maintains clinical exposure through actual intervention, coordination of patient care, role modeling, consulting, problem solving and in-services.

27. Ensures effective delivery of competent, compassionate nursing care based on social, psychological, developmental and spiritual needs of the patients as demonstrated by patient care outcomes achieved through established standards of care and by the patients and families perception of care.

28. Develops clinical experts in the patient care areas.

29. Ensures proper allocation of exam rooms to support multiple clinics and programs throughout the institution.

Certifications/Licensure

Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) as recognized by the Texas State Board of Nursng

Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required. MBA/MHA/MSN strongly preferred.

Experience

Three (3) years of leadership experience in area of specialty (Operating Room venue)
