JOB DESCRIPTION: Registers, collects, labels and processes patient specimens for testing in a timely manner including routine and advanced venipuncture along with other specimen collection as required. Trains/mentors new employee. Float is adaptable to all clinic locations. Maintains the stock of commonly used supplies, performing routine inspections of supply levels to ensure adequate availability. Performs preventive maintenance on equipment. Takes prompt action to resolve any problem with the registration, collection or processing of all specimens including referral specimens using available procedure manuals or reference materials. Assumes in charge responsibilities in the absence of supervisory staff. Registers, collects, labels and processes patient specimens for testing in a timely manner including routine and advanced venipuncture along with other specimen collection as required. As lead, assigns work to others and may be required to act as liaison on off shifts/ weekends. Triages specimens based on patients insurance. May work variable shifts and locations as assigned. Works with supervisor to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services and training classes for various computer systems necessary for patient registration and referral testing. Takes training lead, often as Super User or train the trainer responsibility. Maintains computerized records, resolves and troubleshoots outstanding specimens/collections. Identifies, understands and documents issues, problems, and opportunities and escalates to supervisor when appropriate. Practices universal precautions, barrier protection methods, infection control and isolation procedures when working with body fluids and other contagion to ensure a safe work environment. Assists in training of new staff. Represents department by actively participating in interdepartmental teams. Float able to adapt to various locations. Helps support a positive team atmosphere by participating in all group meetings and team building. Also represents department on interdepartmental teams and LEAN activities. Registers, collects and receives blood and non blood specimens. Reviews test requisitions and specimen labels for accurate information and orders tests appropriately: follows up on all tests with incomplete information or questionable test orders. Schedules and arrives lab appointments. Verifies and updates insurance information and triages specimens to the proper testing facility. Obtains waivers for Medicare coverage when applicable. Processes all emergency orders (STATS) within the required time frame. Preserves the integrity of each sample prior to distributing them to the appropriate department. Processes and prepares referral specimens for shipping to reference laboratories. Reconciles outstanding test orders that have not been resolved through standard operating procedures. Initiates intervention on unacceptable specimens, as needed. Participates in quality improvement activities as it relates to registration procedures, wait times, phlebotomy, processing and the transportation of specimens. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Three years phlebotomy, processing, or customer service exp; intermediate computer skills; intermediate medical terminology, cert preferred. An additional one year of Emory Medical lab experience above 3 year requirement is preferred for stationary, clinic site positions.
