Under direct supervision, performs a variety of patient reception, cashiering & clerical services for an outpatient pharmacy, including taking over-the-counter & telephone requests for prescriptions refills, verifying coverage, receiving payment, answering patient questions, completing pharmacy logs & forms, & maintaining nonprescription inventories. Makes members/patients & their needs a primary focus of one's actions; develops & sustains productive member/patient relationships. Actively seeks information to understand member/patient circumstances, problems, expectations, & needs. Builds rapport & cooperative relationship w/ members/patients. Considers how actions or plans will affect members; responds quickly to meet member/patient needs & resolves problems.
Essential Functions:
* Receives requests from patient for new or refill prescriptions & other pharmacy supplies.
* Answers questions regarding prescription drug coverage, over-the-counter items, prices, pharmacy services & office procedures.
* Screens incoming telephone calls, provides general information as requested, takes & relays messages, & provides appropriate referrals to other Health Plan personnel.
* Verifies patient's prescription drug coverage by reviewing Kaiser identification care & prescription benefit group listing, or by questioning patient to obtain supplemental information & confirming membership status using a microfiche or computer terminal, phones appropriate Health Plan personnel for assistance in verifying patient coverage, as necessary.
* Writes or imprints patient's identification & address on prescription form & appropriate sales receipt, & places both items in specified location for processing.
* Receives cash, check or accepted credit cards in payment for prescriptions or other pharmacy sales, operates a cash register & makes changes, & issues prescription & sales receipt to patient. Reads prescription directions to patient & informs patient of any pertinent instructions as specified by the Pharmacist.
* Takes requests for prescription refills from telephone answering machine, records pertinent information on telephone request log, such as patient's name, physician & prescription number, & pulls original prescription form from file; transfers information to refill form & places it w/ prescription is specified location for processing.
* Orders, receives & maintains over-the-counter inventory of nonprescription supplies & medications, conducts periodic audits to ensure adequate supplies, restocks shelves & maintains neat appearance of inventory & work area.
* Performs other duties as assigned, such as operating a sealing machine & postage meter, recording patient information in mailing log, filing prescription forms & auditing files, completing message slips, ordering office supplies, running errands for designated personnel, & receives training in limited functions of the Pharmacy Technician.
* Standard office environment.
* Working w/ constant noise & interruptions.
* Working in cramped quarters.
* Working around machinery, such as conveyor belts. Works alone.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
* One (1) year of work experience involving public contact and cashiering duties.
Education
* High school graduation or equivalent.
License, Certification, Registration
* N/A
Additional Requirements:
* Ability to perform a variety of patient reception, cashiering and clerical services for and outpatient pharmacy.
* Effective verbal communication and basic math skills.
* Ability to write legibly and remain courteous to members and staff.
* Demonstrated customer service skills, customer focus abilities and the ability to understand Kaiser Permanente customer needs.
* Testing Required: Must authorize a D.E.A. drug screening.
