The Oncology/ Surgical Inpatient unit is located on the third floor of the Central Wing. Three Central is a 33-bed unit consisting of all private rooms. One room is outfitted as a positive pressure room and used for immunosuppressed patients. There are no negative pressure rooms on three central. One room is designated for patients receiving radium implant or isotope therapy.

Adjoining the unit is the Bond Center which is a Patient / Family center and lounge. Seating, telephone, TV, coffee and a quiet space for families is available.

The average daily census is 29 patients. The unit is open for patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

General surgical patients comprise 60 % of the census on 3 central: Vascular, GYN, urological surgery, and colon surgery patients account for the majority of these patients.

Patients who need medical or surgical oncology services, concentrating on the treatment of malignancies showing response to surgical, chemotherapy and / or radiation treatment constitute 25% of the patient population. Theses modalities may be used with curative intent, control of disease or palliative treatment of symptoms.

Patients receiving general medical services constitute 15 % of the inpatient population on 3 central.

Minimum competency requirements include:

Completion of hospital orientation, nursing orientation, Nursing assistant training as appropriate, unit specific orientation, Basic Life Support, annual review, RN's and LPN's must hold current Tennessee Licensure, CNA's must have a current TN certification, licensed nurses must successfully complete the Basic EKG class within one year of employment on unit.

In order to administer chemotherapy at PRMC the Registered Nurse must have taken a chemotherapy course and passed a written exam, as well as perform THREE (3) chemotherapy treatments with peer supervision and complete chemotherapy administration competency checklist. Requires a high school diploma and Tennessee state certification or a junior nursing student that has completed a semester of clinicals.
