OVERVIEW: The Director of Hawthorne Cedar Knolls is charged with responsibility for leadership, conceptualizing and actualizing a model of care, problem solving, and management.  Hawthorne Cedar Knolls is designed to ameliorate the psychiatric and severe emotional distress of 90 adolescents and latency age boys and girls who have histories of child abuse, neglect, and in some cases, psychiatric illness.  The ultimate goals of the programs are to develop and affect plans that will afford the children a sense of permanency and direction.  These plans may include reunification with families of origin and/or extended families, living in the community independently or in a community-based program, attending school and/or employment.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES include but not limited to:

 

  • Operate a safe environment and create a safe environment and create opportunities for youngsters to return to their communities and the least restrictive care in the shortest reasonable time period.

 

  • Director of Hawthorne Cedar Knolls is ultimately responsible for the total operation of the program.  Responsibilities include the programmatic, personnel, quality assurance, fiscal and plan operations issues that are delegated to department heads.  The Director reports to the Campus Director.

 

  • The Director chairs a senior management committee made of the Milieu Director, Unit Directors, CPI Director, Nursing Supervisor, and has a liaison relationship with the Superintendent of Schools.  

 

  • The Director is responsible for developing and managing his/her program budgets. The Director will work with the Business Manager on his/her program's budgets and support services in collaboration with the Deputy Executive Director.

 

  • The Director has direct supervision of the Director of Youth Development and Drug Prevention, CPI Director and, in the absence of a volunteer coordinator; he/she/ supervises the volunteer program directly.  He is also administratively responsible for the three unit psychiatrists.

 

  • Attends the JBFCS Professional Council meetings. He also attends the Children & Adolescents in Residence Divisional Meetings.

 

  • The Director has direct accountability for all city and state audits.  He/she has ultimate responsibility for meeting quality standards and contractual obligations of the NYC Administration for Children's Services, NYS Office of Children and Family Services, Council on Accreditation, Committees of Special Education, and the county Department of Social Services.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 

The Director shall have a minimum of a Master's Degree, preferably in social work, psychology, or special education.  At least seven (7) years must have been spent as an administrator of programs for children.  Prior program directorship in a residential setting is preferred, but a candidate who has demonstrated strong residential leadership experience will be considered.
