About this job

Work for Progress seeks Canvass Directors for 2016 Election Offices. The U.S. has big problems, and we want to make sure those problems get addressed in November. This country is too reliant on oil companies, student debt is crippling an entire generation, and big donors have way too much power in elections. This is your opportunity to stand up and fight for these issues.

Now, we know that elections are not the beginning or the end of social change activism. In order to create meaningful change, long after the elections are over we'll need to continue to run smart campaigns to put pressure on elected decision-makers to do the right thing. But, we also know that elections can help, especially when there is a big difference on where the candidates stand on important issues like climate change, women's rights, and LGBTQ rights. And this year there are BIG differences between the candidates.

That's why we aren't sitting on the sidelines this election season. We're taking action.

A strategic field campaign can inspire thousands of people who were not planning to vote to get to the polls and vote, which can provide the margin of victory. So, for the 2016 election, we will run field campaigns to elect candidates who want to make a difference on issues like global warming and getting big money out of politics.

We will launch field offices across the country to make a difference in the 2016 elections. These offices will be in critical states like New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, or Colorado. We are looking for Canvass Directors to manage these Campaign Offices.

The canvass director exercises independent judgment and discretion to:

  • Recruit a team of committed activist canvassers: You will design a recruitment strategy, write and place ads, and interview and hire top candidates.

  • Manage a field plan: You will create and manage a field plan that involves speaking with tens of thousands of specially identified voters in precincts around the office. You will track information we can adjust for more sophisticated targeting and planning.

  • Manage & train your team of canvassers: Each day, you will hold training sessions in the office, and each week you will get out in the field, yourself, where you will train your staff hands-on to communicate with and motivate voters.

  • Manage operations: You will manage all of the operations behind the scenes. You will be running payroll, reimbursing office expenses, and managing all of the other logistics that go into running a big operation.

Qualifications

Work For Progress is looking for Director candidates with all levels of experience (including entry level). We provide classroom training and ongoing training so that you are prepared to succeed. Our trainings include sessions on how to run a staff recruitment campaign, how to manage and develop leaders in your office, and how to work with advanced mapping and canvassing technology."

That said, while we are ready to train you, we are looking for people who are ready to take on a major challenge. You should be ready to:

  • Go where the fight is. We are looking for people who are flexible geographically and ready to move to work in one of our election offices. This is a big campaign with lots of moving parts so again, flexibility is key.
  • Work hard. It's a campaign, so it will be something you throw yourself into. We have a short window of time and a lot at stake. We pride ourselves on doing what it takes to run a successful campaign. So, you should be prepared to work around 70 hours/week.

Successful candidates will also bring all or most of the following skills and attributes to the position:

- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
