Interpreter/Translator (09L)

The nation's defense depends on information from foreign language newspapers, magazines, radio broadcasts and other sources. Therefore, it's very important that some members of the Army be able to read and understand the many languages of the world. Nowhere is this more important than in the Middle Eastern countries of Iraq and Afghanistan. Currently the Army offers this option to selected Middle-Eastern language speaking individuals to serve on both active and Reserve duty.

English as a Second Language Training

This training is for qualified applicants who require some improvement in English proficiency. They attend this training before they go to basic training.

DEFENSE LANGUAGE INSTITUTE

The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) is the premier training institution within the Department of Defense (DoD) for culturally based foreign language education. DLIFLC is a world renowned school for foreign language and can provide training in 24 languages. At any given time there are 3,500 students attending the Institute, taught by more than 1,700 professional instructors from over 50 countries around the world.

Knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is an essential key for mission success overseas. Many Soldiers are asked to take part in this accelerated program to read, write, listen, and speak foreign languages and receive an education in a foreign culture. These Soldiers then use their skills in Military Intelligence roles listening in on communications or translating in the field.

DLIFLC is an accredited institution with 66 years of experience in foreign language education. Students who attend the Institute can receive an Associate of Arts degree in their foreign language after satisfying graduation requirements and the transfer of 15 units in non-language related subjects from other accredited institutions.

In the classrooms Soldiers have access to state-of-the-art educational technology and are issued tablet PCs, as well as digital audio devices for listening to authentic materials. From the moment Soldiers step onto the campus, they receive an education in study habits, English grammar, and effective learning techniques tailored to best suit their individual needs.

Soldiers are challenged to be the best at the target language they are learning and are rewarded for their efforts. Those who are in the top of their class can attend an isolation immersion event in the country of their target language. Soldiers in this group are invited to travel for up to thirty days to countries like, Korea, China, or Egypt.
