About this job

Position Description:

TRG has established the ODTC Lead position to provide enhanced structure and support for our ODTC pool - a critical engine of our company's growth and health. ODTC Leads will serve and support a cohort of 4-7 ODTC colleagues to perform their best work, pursue professional development objectives, manage their time effectively, and contribute to TRG's mission. ODTC Leads will also serve on the Technical Services Leadership Team (TSLT), working with the Technical Services Director (TSD) and other members of the team to ensure that this vital division within TRG is functioning effectively.

ODTC Leads will continue to take on billable assignments and perform all the client services and delivery responsibilities of other ODTCs. They will maintain robust billability targets of 70-80% time on average. As part of this organizational change, the Technical Services Director and TS Leadership Team will ensure that structural changes are implemented as needed to support this level of billability of ODTC Leads, e.g., by distributing and prioritizing workloads in order to enable this level of effort alongside positive work-life balance.

ODTCs Leads will report directly to the TSD once that person is on board (o/a July 1), and will report to the CEO in the interim until the TSD position is filled.

Responsibilities:

Supportive Supervision

  • Assess workloads and help ODTCs prioritize and plan assignments, including billable work and contributions to TRG ownership activities
  • Support assigned ODTCs to achieve billability targets and maintain positive work-life balance
  • Serve as a thought partner to problem-solve, strategize, and brainstorm on work issues that arise
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and support to ODTCs to build their skills and define and pursue professional development goals
  • Regularly gather and convey performance feedback for each assigned ODTC to support them to deliver their best work
  • Compassionately and proactively address any performance concerns that arise
  • Approve timesheets
  • Provide recommendations for salary increases and bonuses (with final approval by the LT and Board)

Technical Services Leadership

  • Serve as a member of the Technical Services Leadership Team, working closely with the TSD and other teammates to ensure the division is healthy, vibrant, connected, and functioning optimally
  • With the TSD and other ODTC Leads, implement and maintain a strategic staffing approach that optimally aligns our time and talent to our business goals and our mission
  • Facilitate effective communication and information flows to and among ODTCs (about matters of corporate interest, technical excellence and learning, etc.)
  • Contribute to a sense of connection, cohesion, and community within Technical Services and across TRG

We understand that a critical element of employee satisfaction and well-being is an element of autonomy and independence - at TRG and everywhere. The ODTC role at TRG has always been conceptualized as a 'self-managed' role, and in many respects, that will continue to be the case.

Toward this end, ODTC Leads will not:

  • Approve vacation or time off work
  • Closely supervise day-to-day work
  • Assign or direct ODTCs to specific assignments (without consultation or input)
  • Be responsible for creating billable opportunities for their assigned ODTCs
  • Manage their assigned ODTCs as a distinct unit or team within the ODTC pool
  • Replace PM functions in specific projects or systems

ODTCs are expected to manage their time and assignments responsibly for themselves, with support or input where needed from their ODTC Lead, and as aligned with TRG's overall technical strategy and business priorities. All ODTCs will continue to operate as a unified cohort, without siloes based on supervisor assignments.

Qualifications:

  • Current full-time TRG ODTC with at least five years of tenure at TRG
  • A history of good performance and demonstrated ability to meet billability criteria, manage effective client relationships, and work positively and effectively in a range of client systems
  • Experience and interest in managing people and performance, with at least five years of supervisory experience (at TRG or elsewhere)
  • Experience positively and productively managing projects and teams at TRG
  • Experience in a range of training and OD interventions, with a demonstrated understanding of TRG's technical services, programs, internal processes, and systems
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with staff across TRG, at all levels and in all functions
  • Demonstrated history of knowledge sharing, as well as staying current with their technical knowledge and skills
  • High level of emotional intelligence and cultural competency; expertise in change management and complex team dynamics preferred
  • Demonstrated supervisory capabilities:
  • Promotes trust
  • Effectively provides feedback
  • Provides coaching and mentoring
  • Supports professional development
  • Actively listens and communicates clearly
  • Able to advise on management and prioritization of complex workloads
  • Fosters a sense of belonging, inclusion, and psychological safety
  • Willingness to adjust their work portfolio -- including reducing other non-billable work and transferring other commitments -- to make space for this responsibility as needed
  • Enthusiasm to serve as an agent of positive organizational change as we live into an experimental new structure, which we will assess, learn from, and adapt as we go

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

TRG is an equal opportunity employer. We adhere to a policy of making employment decisions without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, citizenship, age, or disability. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
