Role Summary

The Electrical Engineer performs a variety of electrical engineering tasks with regional & central support staff collectively focused on the continuous improvement of all plant equipment, ISO-NE /NERC regulation compliance activities and other related technical aspects. This role’s primary focus is on implementing innovative low life cycle cost engineering solutions to various operations and maintenance issues, as well as supporting capital project creation and execution in accordance with industry accepted engineering practices, governing regulations, and Great River Hydro operating procedures.

This role will also collaborate with other engineers and team members to support the engineering and technical needs of the organization. In addition, the team also supports the automatic control of the GRH facilities through SCADA/RTU technologies. This role will also assist in the technical support of this mission critical function.

This role travels as needed to company offices and facilities located in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Limited overnight and out of the region travel could be required.

Requirements:

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with internal team members to review electrical facilities, identify upgrade needs, create project scoping documents, develop material and labor estimates and schedules, create drawings, review third-party engineering or equipment supplier bid packages and/or technical submittals;
  • Provides and/or develops detailed engineering information for NERC/ISO-NE Compliance;
  • Performs engineering reviews and development of NERC Reliability Standard Audit Worksheets (RSAW) and data supporting ISO-NE Operating and Planning Procedures, compiles evidence, forms and/or data, writes procedures, etc. as requested by the lead;
  • Supports Operations and area maintenance teams with equipment issues, local project development and field troubleshooting;
  • Directs and/ or assists in equipment failure root cause incident investigations;
  • Identifies and communicates various risks associated with all stages of asset life cycle;
  • Develops protective relay operating descriptions and engineering basis of design documentation;
  • Performs and/or assists in various plant and system level engineering studies including arc flash, power flow, short circuit, protection coordination, motor starting, power cable ampacity, etc.;
  • Communicates engineering recommendations to the Manager, Electrical Engineering and area management in a way that fosters consensus and facilitates favorable project outcomes;
  • Evaluates and recommends various contractors and technical service providers;
  • Solicits internal and/or external expertise as needed;
  • Ensures relevant/current engineering documentation is retained in accordance with company expectations and good engineering practice including: drawings, reference manuals and other related information;
  • Utilizes various information systems to ensure accurate project costing; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Education

  • 3-5 years prior/progressive experience in an Engineering environment (power generation or utility experience is a plus) and thorough knowledge of electrical power systems concepts;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited engineering school;
  • Experience and ability to read, revise and interpret a variety of engineering discipline drawings including equipment arrangement, one lines, three lines, schematics, wiring, material lists and conduit & cable schedules;
  • Prior computer programming experience in connecting into various digital devices, their configuration and logic programming;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to travel as needed throughout MA, NH, VT;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Strong time-management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple projects;
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills; and
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on analysis tools such as Access or Excel, AutoCAD and/or MicroStation CAD software packages.
