Job Description

LAC Federal is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Cataloger to work on-site at a federal library in the Bethesda, Maryland, area. The Cataloger will work in the Library's ExLibris' Alma Library Service Platform to perform original and copy cataloging of monographs, including all descriptive and subject cataloging and authority record creation and update. The Cataloger will upgrade existing records to the most current full-level RDA standards. This position has flexible work hours for 30 hours per week. It may increase to 40 hours, depending on the workload. The Cataloger will receive full-time benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create bibliographic records in Create bibliographic records in ExLibris' Alma software, either by importing specific OCLC records or creating a record from a template.
  • Update preliminary cataloging records to current full-level national standards, as modified by local policies.
  • Upgrade OCLC copy records created per pre-AACR2 or per RDA's to full-level RDA standards following the BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) Metadata Application Profiles (MAP), as modified by local policies.
  • Perform original cataloging to full-level RDA standards, following the BSR MAP as modified by local policies
  • Add a full complement of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms to each cataloging record.
  • Add access points to each cataloging record for each agent named in the statement of responsibility.
  • Confirm that all name headings used in the upgraded or created records headings have corresponding fully established authority records in the LCNAMES file in the Alma Community Zone.
  • Create new authority records in the Alma Institutional Zone (local NLMAR) as needed.
  • Creating NACO-required modifications to authority records in the LCNAMES files shall be made in OCLC Connexion software and saved to a local save file.
  • Ensure all bibliographic records have accurate holdings and item records according to local policies.
  • Verify that bound-with titles have a separate Host Bibliographic record for the physical volume; create one from the template as needed.

Requirements

  • Master's in Library and Information Science or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • At least 3 years of experience in cataloging using the following cataloging standards and tools:
    • MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data (MARC21)
    • Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (2nd ed, rev, 2005 update) (AACR2)
    • Library of Congress Rule Interpretations (LCRIs)
    • Resource, Description, and Access (RDA) original toolkit
    • Library of Congress-Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statements (LC- PCCPS)
    • BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) Metadata Application Profiles (MAPs)
  • Proficiency in English
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following languages
    • French, German, Italian or Spanish
  • Excellent written and oral communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical, detailed orientation, and prioritization skills.

Preferred Qualification

  • Experience with ExLibris Alms
  • Experience with rare books and/or special collections materials
  • Experience with Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)
  • Experience creating authority records in accordance with NACO standards
