Job Description

The Digital Literacy Program Instructor will be responsible for planning and implementing lessons for our Digital Literacy Program in the City of Goleta. The Digital Literacy program is designed to teach six sessions of the Computer Basics Classes; 3 sessions for Mature Workers and 3 sessions for English Language New to Tech Learners. Each session will provide 30 hours of instruction within a 6-week session, 5 hours per week/weekend and is aimed at teaching basic and intermediate digital literacy skills (computer functions, web browsing, email, MS Word, MS Powerpoint, etc.) to adults. Duties include delivering group instruction, providing 1 on 1 support during and outside of the session, goal setting with participants and promoting participant goal accomplishments.

This is an hourly temporary position from April 2024 - August 31,2024 with the possibility of extension. Hours for this position are mostly evenings 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm twice per week, Saturday Classes from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and prep and occasional team meetings at other times as needed.

Overview of responsibilities:

  • The Digital Literacy Instructor will be responsible for successfully delivering Computer Basics Curriculum in accordance with the provided lesson plans and scope to implement the digital literacy lessons for adults on topics provided by grant.
  • Prepare lessons using resources provided by H&H and obtained through own research;
  • Conduct program set-up and tear-down before and after session;
  • Collaborate in the development of lesson plans;
  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment for all participants during lessons;
  • Maintain communication with all necessary team members;
  • Adhere to all program and H&H Unstoppable organizational policies.
  • Develop and / or utilize lesson plans that reflect an understanding of how best to teach reading, writing, grammar, listening, speaking, and technology skills in thematically organized and developmentally / culturally appropriate ways.
  • Maintain up-to-date hard and soft copies of lesson plans, syllabi, curricula, and handouts.
  • Teach computer literacy, or other assigned class, in a manner which builds student skill level and confidence.
  • Complete student assessments each cycle, within the communicated timeline.
  • Maintain accurate and timely student files, including students’ work, documentation of skill development, test results, and case notes, as appropriate.
  • Support with classroom administration, including ordering supplies as appropriate.
  • Manage attendance regularly, including documenting the classroom and submitting attendance for each class.
  • Ensure timely data entry into databases as needed.
  • Pre and post-test students or alternative assessment tools.
  • Model the best practices of hospitality and positive culture.
  • Support all aspects of programming, including but not limited to community outreach, recruitment, and participant outreach.
  • Work enthusiastically as part of a team and establish positive relationships with participants, the community, collaborators and partnerships.
  • Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.

An ideal candidate characteristic:

  • At least some post-secondary studies with focus in education
  • Minimum of one year of experience teaching English and computer skills.
  • Understanding of adult literacy and experience delivering instruction to adults either in group or individual setting;
  • Is a self-starter, motivated and organized;
  • Team player and excellent communication skills;
  • Ability and interest in working with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices related to adult literacy, preparing lesson plans, syllabi and curricula, conducting and preparing assessment tools, civic education, immigration legal services and case management, Best Plus Testing, Microsoft Office, including Excel, and working knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
  • Must be a self-starter, highly organized, patient and able to work well with others.
  • Strong hospitality skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one year of experience teaching English and computer skills.
  • Ability and interest in working with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices related to adult literacy, preparing lesson plans, syllabi and curricula, conducting and preparing assessment tools, civic education, immigration legal services and case management, Best Plus Testing, Microsoft Office, including Excel, and working knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
  • Must be a self-starter, highly organized, patient and able to work well with others.
  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Strong hospitality skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possesses or willing to obtain the following background checks.
  • Current check from Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Background Check
  • Current check from Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Criminal Background Check, and
  • Current check from National Sex Offender Registry (NSO).
