Job Description

In addition to the responsibilities of a Principal Engineer:
  • Report to the Manager, Mechanical Engineering.
  • Lead Piping Systems across multiple programs.
  • Responsible for engineering products produced by the Piping Systems group.
  • Manage engineering processes to ensure that quality, schedule and cost performance goals are achieved on all programs.
  • Facilitate communication between D40 and D87 to ensure both departments are successful in the functional and detail design process.
  • Interface with, and support, Design, Engineering, Program Office, Systems Integration, and Concept Design Development, Change Management, Estimating, Contracts, Materials, Planning, Manufacturing, Navy, and other customer organizations.
  • Establish and maintain effective work procedures and instructions for Piping Systems.
  • Provide technical training, guidance, and leadership to assigned personnel, including championing continuous process improvement.
  • Perform supervisory and administrative duties including resource management, employee development, safety, performance evaluations, statusing and progressing work, hiring, honoring labor contracts, and WFM verification.
  • Represent Mechanical Engineering on the Pipe Value Stream team - strong focus on reducing cost and improving quality of that value stream from pipe piece fabrication to system test, activation, and commissioning.


Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering/Naval Architecture from an ABET accredited university or college required.
  • M.S. degree and/or P.E. preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the following disciplines is required: piping systems, purchase specifications, system diagrams, and associated calculations.


Required/Preferred Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of technical experience required; breadth of shipbuilding and marine engineering experience is relevant.
  • 3 years of technical / project lead experience required, including demonstrated technical / project management skills.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire teams of engineers.
  • Understands the elements of ship design.
  • Working knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS).
  • Broad knowledge of regulatory requirements (Naval Ship Specs., ABS, etc.).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Lean Design and Engineering principles.

This position requires you to be able to obtain a government security clearance.
