Brief Job Summary for Respiratory Therapist

The Respiratory Therapist provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of residents with respiratory illnesses and diseases.

Plan, implement, and evaluate diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory services to assist in the management of residents with cardiopulmonary and related disorders.

2. Provide technical support for all equipment related to the nursing center-based practice of Respiratory Therapy.

3. Maintain compliance with federal and state regulations. Is knowledgeable of the Medicare regulations and coverage decisions provided by CMS.

4. Therapy includes but is not limited to the application and monitoring of:
a. medical gases
b. mechanical ventilator support
c. artificial airway care
d. bronchial hygiene
e. pharmacological agents related to respiratory care procedures
f. cardiopulmonary rehabilitation
g. emergent airway care, cardiopulmonary resuscitation

5. Diagnostic activities include but not limited to:
a. Obtaining and analyzing physiological specimens
b. Interpreting physiological data
c. Performing tests and studies of the cardiopulmonary system

6. Resident and family education activities focus on the promotion of cardiopulmonary wellness.

7.Provide/coordinate clinical respiratory services under physician orders.

8. Perform respiratory/clinical assessments.

9. Provide general respiratory therapeutic services including oxygen therapy, medical gas therapy, and aerosol therapy, humidification therapy, and suction therapy, tracheotomy care tracheotomy tube changes, suctioning

10.The operation, maintenance, and management of mechanical ventilators and equipment.

11. Every four hours and as needed ventilator checks and as needed, Weaning.

12.Ensure continuous positive airway pressure therapy, noninvasive ventilation

13. Ensure positive pressure ventilation ensures oxygenation.

14. Perform pulmonary diagnostic tests.

15. Document resident procedures, organize and analyze data, maintain accurate records.

16. Conduct resident assessment and make treatment recommendations, and make a decision based upon protocol.

17. Interact positively with staff, physicians, residents, and family members.

18. Screen, evaluate, and treats residents as per the plan of care. Ensures that residents who are admitted for treatment receive the required services and that the service delivery is documented appropriately.

19. Develop and maintain an administrative record-keeping system that provides an accurate record of the number of treatments given and charges incurred.

20. Perform other duties as requested.

Qualifications required of Respiratory Therapist:

1.Must be a graduate from an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy.
2.Must possess a current license in the state of current practice.
3.Must possess strong knowledge regarding state, federal, and local regulations as they pertain to long-term care.
4.Must meet health assessment requirements.
5.Must be capable of performing the essential function of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
6.Must be able to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, and possess sufficient communication skills to perform the tasks required.
