Summary:

Instructs children in developmentally appropriate activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth in accordance with the YWCA mission, Pre-K Counts requirements, and DHS regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate daily activities in the absence of the lead teacher.
  • Plan individual and group activities to stimulate growth in all developmental areas like, language, social, and motor skills such as learning to listen to instructions, playing with others, and using play equipment in accordance with the policies and the philosophy of the YWCA. Use developmentally appropriate practices consistent with the expectations of NAEYC/NAA and designed to meet the children's assessed needs.
  • Create and follow weekly lesson plans.
  • Conduct a daily health check of each child on arrival; instructs children in practices of personal cleanliness and self-care.
  • Alternate periods of strenuous activity with periods of rest or light activity to avoid over stimulation and fatigue.
  • Help children develop habits of caring for their own clothing and picking up and putting away toys and books.
  • Participate with and supervise children at all times.
  • Submit timely reports, timesheets and statistics.
  • Assess the children's learning needs through documented observations, gear the program to the needs of the individual child, consider the individual child in his/her cultural and socioeconomic background, and help each child to understand his/her value in the group.
  • Provide children with experiences, which build self-esteem, encourage self-reliance, and help each child to function cooperatively in a group.
  • Confer and maintain a positive relationship with families and communicate necessary information in a professional and confidential manner.
  • Serve meals and refreshments to children under CACFP regulations.
  • Maintain personal cleanliness, including washing hands after toileting, nose wiping and before preparing and/or serving lunches and snacks.
  • Keep room environment interesting, safe and clean. Report maintenance and safety concerns to Director or Coordinator, as needed.
  • Perform general housekeeping tasks.
  • Maintain high level of job integrity and professionalism while adhering to ethical code of conduct.
  • Attend family meetings, special events, and all staff meetings.
  • Maintain professional growth in accordance with high quality standards.
  • Complete 24 hours of training annually as assigned. Acceptable professional development includes instruction eligible for Act 48, Continuing Education Credits, college credits, or hours taught by PA DHS certified PQAS instructors based on the Early Learning Standards and the Early Childhood Education Core Body of Knowledge.
  • Complete Fire Safety Training annually.
  • Complete Emergency Safety Training annually.
  • Complete Food Program Training annually.
  • Complete Water Safety Training annually. (site specific)
  • Maintain current CPR and Pediatric First Aid certification.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Work well with staff and volunteers.
  • Work flexible hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

A Pre-K Counts Lead Teacher shall have attained the following qualification level:


  • Bachelor's degree and Level One PA Teaching Certification; at time of offer.
