Overview

Radiographic Test (RT) Level III NDT Examiner/Sr./Specialist/Principal

The successful candidate will serve as an RT Level III Nondestructive Test (NDT) Examiner supporting Electric Boats Groton, CT and Quonset Point, RI facilities. The successful candidate will report directly to the Groton NDT Engineering (NDTE) Supervisor. Primary responsibilities are to develop and qualify NDT procedures for specific applications, review and monitor the NDT training programs and performance of RT Level I and Level II personnel, and administer examinations to certify/recertify RT Level I and Level II personnel. The RT Examiner will provide technical guidance and expertise in RT for both nuclear and non-nuclear applications at Electric Boat.

Additional responsibilities will include:
  • Review, administer and ensure shipyard compliance with fabrication, welding, and NDT military specifications
  • Maintain company standards, procedures, best practices, and process improvements in the field on NDT
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise with respect to on-site construction support and problem resolution, as well as off-site involvement with material suppliers
  • Provide on-site support to the Quonset Point, RI facility up to 40% of the time
  • Provide occasional (e.g. 1-2 days per month, as appropriate) 3rd shift oversight of RT at Electric Boats Quonset Point facility
  • Serve as the project or technical lead on both in-house and externally funded research & development and process improvement/cost reduction tasks.
  • Evaluate new developments in the NDT field for possible application to current and future construction (e.g. Computed Radiography, Film Digitization)
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance, Design and Engineering departments as well as NAVSEA Customer representatives
  • Prepare technical reports in support of testing, research and development, and quality investigations
Responsibilities
  • Applicant should have the interpersonal and communication skills necessary to investigate problems by effectively asking questions, extracting necessary data from available sources, and working with others to determine root causes and implement appropriate solutions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required to ensure effective interface with a variety of organizations.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills in order to evaluate situations make recommendations and take prompt and effective action.
  • Basic computer skills, including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point (or equivalent)
Qualifications

Required:
  • High-school diploma or GED
  • Currently or previously certified as an RT Level III Examiner
  • Must be able to certify to NAVSEA 250-1500-1 RT Level III Examiner status within one (1) year of onboarding to Electric Boat
  • Internal candidates must come from organizations outside Operations (Casciano/Gabriel).
Preferred:
  • Level III RT experience in shipbuilding industry or other heavy fabrication industry
  • 3+ years experience as a certified RT Level III Examiner
  • Active Level III certifications in additional NDT methods (e.g. MT, PT, VT, ET, UT)
  • A background in engineering/quality assurance or engineering/quality assurance support
  • Familiarity with Military specifications (e.g. Tech Pub 271 and NAVSEA 250-1500-1)
  • Current or previous RT Level III NAVSEA 250-1500-1 certification(s)
  • Applicant must be able to read, write, and interpret specifications, procedures, reports, and other documents
  • Ability to serve as project lead or technical lead on process improvement/cost reduction tasks.
  • Applicant must have the ability to understand basic principles of multiple NDT methods and applications to determine weld and base metal performance.
