Job Description

Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative of Chase City, VA is looking to hire a full-time Plant Accountant. Are you a talented and hardworking accounting professional who is eager to give back to your community? As much as you love a balanced ledger, do you also have a creative, "think-out-of-the-box" side with exceptional excel skills? Would you like to work for an electric utility, member-owned cooperative with an outstanding reputation as both a community leader and an outstanding place to work? If so, please read on!

ABOUT MECKLENBURG ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE (MEC)

Our electric cooperative was formed in 1938 by the members, for the members. For over 80 years, we have been building a legacy of providing safe, reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible electric service for our members. Today, we serve over 31,000 accounts in portions of nine Southside Virginia counties and five northern North Carolina counties. We are a Touchstone Energy Cooperative, headquartered in Chase City, VA, with three district offices located in Chase City, Gretna, and Emporia. We support and care about the communities that we serve. We are deliberately different in every aspect of the word. Focusing on meeting our members' needs while ensuring quality, reliable service with safety at the forefront sets us apart from other organizations.

As a not-for-profit, member-owned cooperative, our main objective is to provide our members with excellent service. And, in order to do that, we must ensure our employees are the best of the best! Here, you are not just an employee, you are part of a family; and, as such, you will receive the resources, education, and training to be the best in your field!

A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A PLANT ACCOUNTANT

As a Plant Accountant, you oversee the distribution of the cost of construction and retirements from the work-in-progress accounts to the plant accounts. You provide support and assistance to the Finance and Accounting Department in providing accurate accounting for all materials, labor, and overhead for all construction and retirement jobs undertaken by any of our crews. You prepare cost reports, whether actual or estimated, for new construction, line relocation, and line damage projects. You ensure invoicing for such projects are accurate and timely.

Your diligence and attention to detail are invaluable to our success. Though much of your time is spent independently indulging your love of numbers, you also get to use your interpersonal skills on a regular basis. You collaborate regularly with the other Finance and Accounting team members, assist in developing more efficient procedures and use of resources, and respond to inquiries about project budgets and invoicing. Your accounting and finance knowledge plays a critical role in the development of the processes, procedures, and policies that ensure that we are able to continue serving our members in the exceptional way that we always have.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A PLANT ACCOUNTANT

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
  • 3 years of experience in accounting
  • Knowledge of cost accounting principles
  • Exceptional Excel skills
  • Must satisfactorily pass pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screenings, participate in a drug-free workplace and have quality work ethic and safety record.

Are you able to effectively prioritize tasks and work independently under tight deadlines? Do you have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal? Are you also a team player? Is accuracy a high priority for you? If so, you just might be perfect for this Plant Accountant position!

WORK SCHEDULE

This is a full-time Monday through Friday, 8 am - 5 pm position.
