Minimum Qualifications: 

 

  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Ability to swim 50 yard without stopping
  • Able to enter the pool safely, swim 20 yards to retrieve 10 lbs of weights, return to the starting point within 1 minute, 50 seconds.

 

Training/Certification available to those that meet the minimum qualifications.

 

Job Title: Lifeguard

 Responsible for ensuring the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. 

Lifeguarding:

· American Red Cross or equivalent Lifeguarding and First Aid.

· American Red Cross or equivalent Waterfront Lifeguarding and First Aid for non-surf open-water positions.

· American Red Cross or equivalent Water park Lifeguarding and First Aid for water park and multi-attraction facility positions. 

· American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

· Pre-employment testing of lifeguarding knowledge and skills may be required.

· Pre-employment drug screen required.

· Strong communication and problem solving skills required!

 

Knowledge and Skills: 

· Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques .

· An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures.

· Leadership and public relations skills.

· Decision-making and communication skills.

 

Responsibilities: 

· Recognize and respond quickly and effectively in emergencies.

· Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations.

· Inspect the facility on a daily schedule and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor.

· Complete records and reports.

· Participate in regular in-service training sessions.

· Maintain fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance).

· Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor. 

Responsibilities
To safeguard the organization from internal as well as external threats.
To initiate, coordinate and manage all the safety related tasks within the organization.
To allocate tasks to the safety department staff and monitor their work. He also plays a role in recruitment of new safety staff and has to ensure that proper training is given to new recruits and that they are equipped with all the safety tips to be followed in the organization.
To undertake various security related checks and correct the drawbacks, if any.
Issue guidelines and directives to the staff on a regular basis and ensure that the guidelines and rules are properly followed. To make the staff knowledgeable about useful workplace safety tips.
To ensure that all the documentation concerning the safety department is up-to-date.
In case an accident occurs, the manager has the task of finding the root cause behind the accident and ensuring that the same incident is not repeated in future.
Arrange the safety related machinery and infrastructure and check the machinery periodically.

Position Description: Life Guard 
Department: Aquatic Community Services/Parks and Recreation

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

Safeguards and regulates conduct of pool patrons. Enforces pool policies, rules, and regulations. Rescues patrons and performs appropriate follow-up procedures, including the proper use of equipment in the performance of first aid.

Test water quality in pool and maintains appropriate records. Assists in the proper maintenance and sanitary up keep of the pool, pool area, and locker rooms. Participates in the preparation of daily records. Provides written reports on all accidents. Maintains proper updated safety requirements.

Attends in-service training and instructs certain skills to staff. Conducts patron swimming test to assess ability to swim independently and unattended. Provides customer service to patrons, including handling customer conflict and complaints, as necessary.

Performs work safely in accordance with departmental safety procedures. Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work conditions or practice to supervisor.

May provide guidance to less experienced Lifeguards during shift. May assist Aquatics Coordinator in daily aquatic managerial duties. May maintain proper chemical balances in both pool and whirlpool as directed making adjustments to these balances as directed. May handle mechanical/pump room or chemical problems as necessary.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of water rescue methods. Knowledge of life guarding and first-aid practices and techniques. Knowledge of swimming pool operations to include: sanitation, maintenance, and safety. Must have the ability to courteously and firmly interact with pool patrons. Ability and skill in carrying out water rescues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must possess a valid American Red Cross Life guarding Certificate and American Red Cross First Aid certificate. Must be certified in American Red Cross Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), for the Professional Rescuer or become certified within 30 days of employment.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience lifeguarding. Pool Operators license. First Responders certificate.
