Description:Please Note: This is a PRN Position


The Optometrist will provide quality eye care and emergency treatment to patients. The primary focus will be to examine eyes and visual system, diagnose problems or impairments, prescribe corrective lenses, and provide treatment. May prescribe therapeutic drugs to treat specific eye conditions. The optometrist will collaborate with clinic providers and support staff on patient referrals.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform vision tests, analyze results and develop a treatment plan
  • Examine eyes, using observation, instruments and pharmaceutical agents, to determine visual acuity and perception, focus and coordination and to diagnose diseases and other abnormalities such as glaucoma or color blindness.
  • Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and medications
  • Prescribe therapeutic procedures to correct or conserve vision.
  • Provide pre- and postoperative care to patients undergoing eye surgery—for example, examining a patient’s eyes the day after surgery
  • Evaluate patients for the presence of diseases such as diabetes and refer patients to other healthcare providers as needed
  • Consult with and refer patients to ophthalmologist or other health care practitioner if additional medical treatment is determined necessary.
  • Promote eye health by counseling patients, including explaining how to clean and wear contact lenses
  • Work closely with providers and clinical staff in the provision of team delivery of healthcare
  • Maintain accurate, timely and quality health records
  • Participate in all quality measures as required
  • Provide services relevant clinic locations and school based health centers (SBHC).


Requirements:

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education: A Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited institution is required.


Licensure/Certification/Experience:

  • Unrestricted license to practice optometry in the State of Louisiana
  • Current CPR certification
  • Louisiana certification with the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy
  • Three (3) or more years of experience preferred


Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • EMR experience preferred
