TITLE: Camp Counselor

DEPARTMENT: Operations

REPORTS TO: Camp Director

CLASSIFICATION: Summer / Seasonal Hire Non-Exempt 2024

PAY RATE: $15.00/hr.

WORK SCHEDULE: Generally, Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5:00 PM

(Some weekend work on Special Event days)

Description Summary

A Camp Counselor’s primary responsibility is to safely lead camp activities and programs under the guidance and direction of The Camp Director, and the guidance and instruction of the Deputy Director, Waterfront Director, Lead Counselor, and Head Lifeguards. Camp Counselors teach and lead safe, stimulating, adventurous and educational camp programs. Camp Counselors are instrumental in teaching young people outdoor skills and recreation. Camp Counselors must be willing and available to help with additional tasks as needed.

All camp staff must be outdoor-loving, fun, energetic, and have the physical ability to lead and participate in various camp programs and adventure activities which include, but are not limited to biking, hiking, archery, nature, swimming, kayaking, and craft activities.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

This position’s primary responsibilities are:

  • Ensuring the safety of campers, and teaching and leading camp programs
  • Lead and participate in various camp programs and activities
  • Assist Lead Camp Counselor(s) and Camp Director as needed
  • Work in harmony with other camp staff and visiting chaperons or BGCNF Club Staff.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Attend relevant staff meetings and training events
  • May participate in additional special programs and/or events
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification or ability to become certified during training
  • Certified Archery Instructor (training may be provided)
  • Valid identification and employment authorization documents to complete Form I-9
  • Experience working with youth is a plus.

SUPERVISORY: This position does not supervise other staff members. Camp Counselors are guided by The Lead Camp Counselor(s) as directed by The Camp Director and supervised by The Camp Director.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This seasonal position generally works up to 40 hours per week, M – F, from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM; however, may require longer hours outside of this schedule when necessary. Saturdays may also be available. Transportation to and from Camp may be provided. Work is conducted mostly outdoors, and employees must have tolerance to summer weather and love the outdoors! Part-time work may be available during the school year for excellent summer employees.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods, bending and squatting on occasion
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to push/pull up to 100 lbs. with assistance
  • Must be able to bend, reach, twist, and turn with complete flexibility
  • Must be able to work in a team environment
  • Must be able to walk/run in sand
