POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Bioscience Laboratory Supervisor oversees the Bioscience Laboratory and provides leadership within the department. Responsibilities include ensuring accurate lab testing, maintaining quality documentation, and translating the Bioscience QA/QC Manager's goals into actionable plans. The Bioscience Laboratory Supervisor will lead and develop the Bioscience Laboratory Technicians, fostering a culture of continuous learning, contributing to conflict resolution, and maintaining a positive work environment. The role also includes accountability for team performance, clear communication of expectations, managing personnel scheduling and leave, and conducting annual reviews with leads and team members, ultimately enhancing the department's efficiency and success. This position also requires collaboration with cross-functional teams as well as external business partners in support of continuous improvement, or where opportunities for improvement exist.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Safety:
    • Ensure all team members under their supervision follow safety protocols.
    • Monitor safety compliance within the department.
    • Report safety incidents, investigate them, and implement corrective actions.
    • Encourage a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork.
    • Assist in incident investigations and provide necessary information.
    • Ensure 100% completion of the Team’s Safety & Compliance monthly training.
    • Closeout CAPA's/Near Miss investigations within the designated timeframe.
  • Quality:
    • Perform checks of sample programs for accurate lab testing.
    • Create and maintain Work Instructions and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) supporting quality and food safety programs.
    • Translate Bioscience QA/QC Manager's goals into actionable plans.
    • Set up and conduct experiments, tests, and analyses using various techniques.
    • Use, maintain, and provide technical support for laboratory instruments and microbiological & mycotoxin instruments.
    • Manage the shipping and subsequent data for required regulatory and process sample shipping to 3rd-party lab analysis.
  • Engagement:
    • Provide leadership in supervising the Laboratory, developing laboratory technicians and encourage a culture of continuous learning and development.
    • Resolve conflicts, support team members, and foster a positive work environment.
    • Provide clear quality expectations, guidelines, and procedures to team members.
    • Hold the team accountable for high performance, good attendance, monitor team performance, seek improvement opportunities, and escalate issues when necessary.
    • Understand the value of developing a second-in-command or "number 2."
    • Approve timecards/PTO for leads and front-line team members.
    • Plan and maintain proper coverage for PTO and call-ins.
    • Conduct annual reviews with leads and team members.
    • Collaboration with internal and external business partners in support of CI or OFI’s.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A 2-year technical degree in a related field or a four-year degree in a science-based or related field is strongly desired.
  • Minimum of two years in a leadership role in ethanol manufacturing quality assurance, including managing professional and leadership roles.
  • Experience with operation and maintenance of HPLC, GC-FID, IC, KF Moisture Analysis
  • Knowledge of ethanol manufacturing processes, GMPs, and Feed Safety preferred.
  • Experienced or knowledgeable in ethanol plant water systems treatment and analysis.
  • Internal Auditor, PCQI Feed, and HACCP certifications preferred.
  • Ability to communicate technical, scientific, and regulatory information, both written and verbally.
  • Ability to make presentations, facilitate meetings, conduct root cause analysis, and provide training to various groups within the organization.
  • Proficiency in using PC software programs, including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Outlook.
