POSITION TITLE: Dentist

POSITION NO: 1627

JOB SUMMARY

The Dentist provides general dental treatment for patients including oral disease diagnosis and treatment, pediatric dentistry, prosthodontics, operative dentistry, oral surgery, and endodontics.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Performs comprehensive oral evaluations using radiographs, periodontal charting, and impressions.

2. Documents and charts extra oral and intraoral hard and soft tissue findings.

3. Performs comprehensive care on patients of all ages; performs comprehensive care on medically complex and pregnant patients.

4. Formulates, discusses, and agrees upon treatment plan options with patients.

5. Extracts teeth, performs root canals, removes caries from teeth, prepares teeth for fillings and inserts material such as amalgam and composite.

6. Restores teeth affected by caries, through restorations, crowns, and fixed partial dentures, to carry out agreed upon treatment plans.

7. Diagnoses and treats pathological conditions, prescribes medication for treatment of diseases of a dental nature, administers local anesthetic and takes dental radiographs.

8. Fabricates appliances such as dentures, partials, minor orthodontic appliances, fixed partial dentures, crowns, and inlays.

9. Provides patient education and oral health instruction.

10. Completes documentation in a timely manner, to ensure records are accurate and up to date.

11. Trains staff on appropriate dental applications, when necessary, to ensure a well-educated staff.

12. Sees emergency patients, and performs emergency procedures, in order to reduce or eliminate immediate pain.

13. Performs in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and protocols.

14. Acts as a clinical leader and resource, promotes a positive work environment, and supports change within the department and organization.

15. Collaborates with other health care providers to ensure continuity of care.

16. Proctors dental student externs in providing comprehensive dental care.

17. Regular attendance of contracted hours is required to carry out the essential functions of this role.

18. Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.

Minimum Required: Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).

EXPERIENCE

Minimum Required: None

Preferred/Optional: Previous experience.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.

Minimum Required: Must hold or be eligible to obtain and maintain a valid, unrestricted license to practice in the State of Wisconsin. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association within three months of hire.

Preferred/Optional: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association at time of hire.

PATIENT POPULATIONS SERVED

Individuals hired are expected to serve patients of different ages, backgrounds, etc. When performing the essential functions of the role, the individual must identify the patient age group to be served and apply the appropriate care based on the patient’s age and background. The hiring manager is responsible for communicating the patient population generally encountered in the role and is responsible for ensuring the appropriate cultural, age and related training needed to serve the patient populations.
