cresa IS SEEKING lateral LAW ENFORCEMENT (pOLICE) AND FIRE dispatchers THAT ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT SERVING THE COMMUNITY TO JOIN OUR HIGHLY TRAINED AND TALENTED TEAM!

911 Communications Dispatchers at CRESA dispatch police, fire and medical services. CRESA dispatcher must all perform 911 Call Taking essential job functions. Must be available to work all days, all shifts and overtime. Dispatch Schedule is rotating 4 days on 4 days off, Call Taker Schedule is generally 4 days on and 3 days off, and overtime is common. Shifts and schedules are according to seniority so new employees usually work graveyard or swing shift.

lateral MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have successfully passed training and probation for Dispatching for Police or Fire plus have 2 years on the job experience at an agency/PSAP within the United States.
  • Must have knowledge and abilities of a fully trained non probationary Dispatcher. See below Knowledge and Abilities sections.
  • Must be at least 18 years or older
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be able to legally work in the United States
  • Excellent computer skills, knowledge and experience (ability to monitor 4+ computer screens)
  • Proven critical thinking skills, accurate data entry, prioritization of public safety and dependability
  • Ability to memorize and recall details, codes and procedures
  • Ability to work all days and hours, and overtime as needed. Must be available to work graveyard and swing shift. Must be available to work weekends and holidays.

911 DISPATCHER ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Dispatch police, fire and medical services
  • Make fast decisions regarding which resources and personnel to dispatch based on the information at hand
  • Monitor rapidly changing data to ensure first responder safety and swift, accurate dispatch of information
  • Memorize and recall complex codes and protocol, based on policy and individual user agency protocol
  • Maintain calm and controlled demeanor over the radio
  • Assess and appropriately respond to a caller's emotional state
  • Evaluate and prioritize calls based on urgency
  • Determine the correct jurisdiction, equipment and personnel to be dispatched
  • Dispatch appropriate law, fire or emergency personnel and equipment
  • Respond to requests from emergency response personnel

CALL TAKER ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Answer and process 911 calls for police, fire and medical.
  • Answer 311 calls for service of routine, and non-emergent requests from citizens and user agencies
  • Pay strict attention to detail and respond correctly in life-threatening and safety situations
  • Develop and keep positive working relationships
  • Learn and use geography knowledge correctly
  • Hear and understand information spoken by phone, two-way radio or in person
  • Speak clearly and concisely by phone, two-way radio or in person
  • Speak and understand English fluently
  • Read and understand information in any format: electronic, printed, or handwritten
  • Stretch, reach and lift objects up to 5 pounds
  • Work regular work shifts of 10.25 hours
  • Work any assigned shift: days, swing, graveyards
  • Work holidays, weekends, as assigned
  • Work overtime as required even on short notice
  • Report to work on time even during inclement weather or other adverse circumstances

  1. Application Screening- (Pass/Fail) - All applicants must complete a job application (not just submit a resume) and meet the minimum job qualifications. Candidates who do not meet these qualifications will be notified.
    1. Felony convictions are disqualifying
    2. Unavailable to work weekends, holidays and overtime is disqualifying
    3. Unable to type over 25 wpm or more is disqualifying

  2. Video Information about Selection Process & Training of 911 Call Taking Dispatch- (required) Review this presentation and an email acknowledgement verifying candidate reviewed the video and their availability to work shifts and days.
  3. CritiCall Examination- (Required - Pass/Fail) - occurs approximately 1 weeks after step 2. CritiCall is a computerized job skills test focused on data entry speed and accuracy, working memory, multi-tasking, decision-making and following instructions. Candidates are generally notified of their CritiCall score within 2 weeks after completing exam. Must receiving passing scores to continue.
  4. Test Ranking (Optional) - If there are 30 or more eligible candidates, they may be test ranked, to determine the top thirty (30) candidates that may immediately proceed to the Oral Board Interview.
  5. Panel Interview- (Required - Pass/Fail) -CRESA conducts oral panel interviews. Eligible candidates will receive an invitation.
  6. Dispatch "Sit-Along"- (required) Candidates will be notified when they are eligible to schedule a 2 hour "sit along" with a 911 Call-Taker Dispatcher.
  7. Final Interview- (Scored, must receive at least 65% or higher to pass) -CRESA conducts behavioral and situational interview with Assistant Operations Manager, Deputy Director or one of their designees. Eligible candidates will receive an invitation - dates to be determined.
  8. Eligible List- (Ranked scoring) - Eligible candidates will be ranked based on 40% of their test scores and 60% of the Second Oral Board Interview score. *A special eligibility list for laterals may be created at the request of the Operations Manager which moves them to the top of the ranking order.
  9. Conditional Offer - Contingent on additional screening based on job, see below and attached.


  1. Background Investigation- (Pass/Fail, conducted in rank order) - Requires detailed Personal History form and comprehensive background investigation with elements including but not limited to candidate's employment history, education, job and personal references, criminal history, driving record check, etc.
    1. Disqualifiers: Felony Convictions, Dishonesty, Falsification, Failure to Disclose, Failure to provide appropriate contact information, Behavior that does not support Public Safety Code of Ethics or CRESA values.
  2. Conditional Job Offer- (Offered in ranked order) - When a vacancy is available, the candidate will receive a conditional job offer of employment, contingent upon successfully passing the post-offer processes.
  3. Post-Offer Process- (Pass/Fail) - Post offer processes include a psychological evaluation, fingerprinting criminal review, general medical examinations, drug test and baseline hearing and vision tests.
