The Counselor will deliver direct substance abuse counseling to adult clients at Palmer Correctional Facility.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • The ability to acquire Chemical Dependency Counselor II or QAP equivalent certification within 3 years of date of hire
  • Ability to pass a drug screening and State of Alaska background check

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services or closely related field
  • Experience in substance abuse or mental health field including:
    • Delivering direct therapeutic services (group and individual)
    • Crisis intervention skills
    • Treatment planning and treatment team participation
    • Case management

 

Skills required:

  • Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills
  • Punctuality and consistent reliability reporting to work
  • Understanding of being trauma informed and awareness of cultural differences
  • The ability to:
    • Be a team player, demonstrating motivation, exercising discretion and dependability
    • Build rapport with clients and staff
    • Establish and maintain clear therapeutic boundaries
    • Maintain confidentiality and treat everyone with dignity and respect
  • Basic computer skills and fluid use of electronic communication tools 


Job responsibilities:

  • Develop written treatment plans using the client’s strengths and individualized treatment needs. Aid the client to participate in the development of this treatment plan and conduct treatment plan reviews as needed through the duration of treatment
  • Prepare and conduct individual and group counseling sessions, structuring the sessions according to the needs, goals and individual strengths and limitations of each client
  • Attend weekly clinical treatment team meetings
  • Provide case management and work cooperatively with collateral services. Counselor I will refer clients to appropriate services as needed
