Interested in becoming a First-Class Volunteer Firefighter with Tooele City? If you will be at least 18 years old in the next six months, live in Tooele City limits, and are committed to becoming Firefighter I and II certified, get your name on our interest roster today.

Since 1919, Tooele City's fire protection has been provided by volunteers. We carry a foster of 55 active First-Class Volunteer Firefighters, many of whom serve for decades eventually moving to our Senior roster where they remain affiliated with the department passing down their knowledge and leadership.

Our department:

  • Is proud of our work ethic;
  • Is committed to serving our City with the highest quality of professionalism;
  • Values training and professional development;
  • Values our long-standing traditions while progressing forward to meet the changing needs of our City;
  • Honors our commitment to protect the life and safety of our neighbors, their property, and the environment; and
  • Willingly answer the call when someone is in need.

We also offer one of the greatest fire prevention programs in the State of Utah and see our outreach programs as vital to connecting with and educating our community on fire prevention and safety.

Our members are diverse and bring different skills, qualifications, and interests that all contribute to our team. In addition to firefighting, you may find you have a specialty interest such as excelling at the equipment side, training, public outreach, children's facility tours, parades, hazardous materials response, emergency assist and extrication.

While this is a volunteer position, you'll enjoy some benefits including:

  • Enrollment in our Length of Service Award Plan that provides you with a monthly payment upon attaining age 65;
  • Life Insurance;
  • Line of duty death, impairment, and other covered benefits;
  • Free mental health services for you, your spouse, eligible dependents;
  • Workers' compensation coverage;
  • Death and Disability benefits provided through the Utah Retirement System for eligible volunteer firefighters; and,
  • Free admission to the Oquirrh Hills Golf Course and Pratt Aquatic Center as part of our wellness pass.

The Tooele Volunteer Firefighter Association and our department committees provide moral-building events and activities that provide you and your family with the opportunity to recreate, create relationships, and feel part of our fire family.

After your application is submitted, you'll receive more information about our department and updates about your status during our selection process. Some years we have several openings and others we're pretty stable. By getting on our roster, we know you want to serve!
