In keeping with our organization’s goals, the primary purpose of the Unit Manager is to assist the Director of Nursing to plan, organize, develop and direct the overall operation of our Nursing Service Department. Success in this position is measured by compliance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility. Additionally, success is measured through patient quality outcomes.

Administrative

  1. Assists in ensuring quality nursing care to all residents. Supports and practices the philosophy, nursing objectives and standards of the Nursing Department.

  2. Assists the Director of Nursing in providing in-services and staff development to meet quality of care standards and comply with state and federal regulations.

  3. Provides clinical expertise to facilitate and support quality of care.

  4. Safety concerns are identified, and appropriate actions are taken to assure patient safety.

  5. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing and/or the Administrator.

  6. Makes regular rounds on nursing units and on all shifts to assess performance of nursing staff and monitor the quality of care provided to residents.

  7. Assists with ensuring nursing department compliance with all federal, state and local regulations.

  8. Participates in internal audits of nursing practices and in developing and implementing a plan of correction when deficits are identified.

  9. Participates in ensuring all facets of the nursing budget are within established parameters.

  10. Participates in the quality assessment and improvement process and activities, including monthly audits of MD orders.

  11. Assists the Director of Nursing in ensuring that the nursing department is adequately staffed to provide quality care to residents, as directed, by assisting with:

    1. Establishing and facilitating effective employer/employee relations.

    2. Recruiting and selecting nursing service personnel based on facility need, as directed by the Director of Nursing.

    3. Ensuring forms and processes related to hiring are completed for new employees.

    4. Ensuring staffing of the nursing department is at a level congruent with resident needs, budgeted positions and employee requests.

    5. Scheduling nursing manpower to support individual and group activities for residents outside the facility.

    6. Participating in orientation sessions for nursing service personnel.

    7. Evaluating performance for all levels of nursing service personnel.

    8. Participating in “on-call” schedule for nursing supervisory personnel to ensure 24/7 nursing support for staff nurses.

  12. Assists in ensuring a safe and sanitary environment for residents, employees and visitors.

  13. Participates in development and implementation of a program to ensure a safe environment for residents, staff and families.

  14. Investigates all nursing department employee accidents in accordance with procedures outlined in the facility's safety standards.

  15. Monitors and reviews resident incidents to identify possible compliance issues and to identify patterns that might require preventive intervention.

  16. Assists in implementation of infection control policies and procedures as outlined in the facility’s program, as directed. Ensures that all nursing staff members are educated and utilize infection control practices for the protection of employees, residents and families.

  17. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing.

    1. Serves as a member of facility committees as assigned by the Director of Nursing.

    2. Participates in the development, implementation and revision of facility policies, standards and procedures, as directed.

Supervisory Responsibility

  1. Unit Manager, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties. In the absence of the Director of Nursing, you are charged with carrying out the resident care policies established by this facility.

Work Environment
This role requires regular walking to various locations within a facility. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Demonstrating proper procedure during education seminars is a critical part of this position. This would require the ability to lift, twist, bend or stand as necessary.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Although this is a Monday through Friday position, in the world of Nursing Home Administration, significant events can occur at any given time. Ongoing direction and support may be necessary if systems aren’t properly implemented, continuously improved upon, and monitored.

Required Education and Experience

  • Must possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Registered Nurse in the State of Texas.
  • 3 years’ experience in a Supervisor role in healthcare, Long-Term Care experience preferred.
  • Minimum six (6) months experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices preferred.

  • Must be knowledgeable of reimbursement regulations and nursing practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to nursing facility administration.

  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must be able to communicate policies, procedures, regulations, reports etc., to personnel, residents, family members, visitors, and government agencies.
  • Must be able to demonstrate leadership, organizational skills, and maintain a positive and professional attitude.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed.

  • Strong utilization knowledge of Point Click Care.

  • Computer literacy skills (Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office, Internet).
  • Ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
