Manufacturing Engineer

Department: Operations

Reports to: Continuous Improvement Manager

Location: Bremerton

FSLA Status: Exempt

Pay: $75K - $90K DOE


JOB SUMMARY:

This role is responsible for supporting primarily the Marine Systems Integration production processes at SAFE Boats International. This position will play a critical role in providing technical information and support throughout the systems integration value stream during the boat build. Plans, designs, and coordinates the integration of machinery, equipment, and Team Members into the manufacturing process to maximize efficiency, quality, and reduce cost. This position will also share responsibility for meeting safety, schedule, quality and planned build hours by developing and improving processes.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports the department by acting as a liaison for supervisors by relaying information, providing feedback and escalating any production barriers to appropriate parties
  • Mentor supervisors in streamlining processes and ensuring consistency
  • Develops standard work with inputs from Department Leadership
  • Demonstrates technical expertise to perform root cause analysis – eliminating problems through design analysis, ergonomic issues, and machine/process improvements, including machine purchase requirements
  • Studies manufacturing methods, utilizing knowledge of product design, assembly processes, and industrial engineering. Studies utilization of facilities, equipment, materials, and team members to suggest layouts that enhance productivity.
  • Gathers and analyzes process information including cycle times, measurements, test results, trends, etc., used for cost analysis and planning.
  • Researches and analyzes design proposals for ability to manufacture on a basis that minimizes waste and cost. Suggests design modifications to facilitate production.
  • Assists Engineering, customer support group, manufacturing team, and other departments to resolve problems.
  • Participates in cross-functional meetings to evaluate staffing mix and levels necessary for safe and efficient manufacturing.
  • Collaborates with Engineering Team to discuss and evaluate new product design or re-design with design to manufacturability in mind.
  • Uses PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) methodology
  • Conducts periodic inspections and checks of various aspects of the manufacturing process related to Marine Systems Integration.
  • Uses research and analysis of facts and data to estimate future manufacturing requirements
  • Participates in the installation and sequencing of machines, work stations, tools, parts and supplies to optimize the efficiency of the production process.
  • Assists Engineers in preparing engineering process documentation.
  • Evaluate, develop and implement improvements quickly
  • Actively participate in SBI improvement processes and relay information to affected parties
  • Monitor and measure manufacturing processes to identify ways to reduce losses, decrease time requirements, or improve quality
  • Ensure safety, quality and planned build hour expectations can be met through process improvements and design for manufacture
  • Conducts process improvement events in conjunction with CI Manager to optimize flow in the value stream
  • Coordinate with managers, supervisors and master scheduler to maximize flow and TM utilization in overall value stream
  • Supports the development of budgets and CAPEX requirements for near- and long-term improvements
  • Lead standardization of information flow to the shop floor by working with all stakeholders of process


SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent knowledge of lean principles and how to apply them to SBI value streams
  • Excellent PC computer skills to include intermediate to advanced experience with Autocad, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, Power Point
  • Ability to convert designs into production action plans.
  • Can learn about and perform within the principles of Lean Manufacturing, Just in Time, and Total Quality Management.
  • Excellent math, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to share information effectively and teach/train others
  • Ability to competently work independently, with minimal supervision, and with a team
  • Ability to be flexible in working overtime when needed, work different shifts, on short notice as necessary

Required Experience & Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Engineering Technology, Chemical or Electrical Engineering required or a minimum of five years of relevant experience as a Manufacturing Engineer.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a Manufacturing Engineering role in a similar industry
  • Requires extensive problem-solving skills to troubleshoot situations such defective parts, equipment or designs issued, tool and equipment problems, while maintaining productivity

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, crawling, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, stooping, squatting, and stretching
  • Listening and hearing ability and visual acuity
  • May be able to work at heights
  • Must be able to load into, ride, and make assessments while on watercraft, as needed
