Job Description

Position Overview: The Packaging Engineer, plays a pivotal role in managing and coordinating the design, development, and validation of packaging concepts for new and existing products. This role involves collaborating with external suppliers, issuing RFQs for packaging materials, supporting container design launches, and addressing concerns related to current container designs.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Prototype Packaging Development:
    • Coordinate and lead the development of prototype packaging using various materials, including folding cartons, plastic or foil, stretch wrap, foam, and appropriate shipping containers.
    • Ensure the design and development of packaging solutions for cost-effective shipping of Work-in-Progress (WIP) and finished products.
  2. Container Design and Validation:
    • Analyze engineering drawings and product specifications to conceptualize container design.
    • Conduct plant reviews to obtain approvals and collect feedback.
    • Follow containers in transit, validating that containers do not contribute to part damage.
    • Document all findings and approvals for communication to relevant stakeholders.
  3. Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Work with cross-functional teams at all levels to ensure containers consider production efficiencies and ergonomics, protecting operators during loading and unloading.
  4. Support to Outside Contractors:
    • Support outside contractors, including obtaining quotes and overseeing the build of packaging designs released to external suppliers.
  5. Documentation and Database Management:
    • Develop and maintain packaging instruction sheets and all packaging-related databases.
    • Confer with customers or sales engineers in the development of returnable containers and expendable packaging.
  6. Advisory Role:
    • Advise management, plant personnel, and customers on efficient packaging/container procedures.
    • Stay informed about innovations in packaging materials and container utilization.
  7. Continuous Improvement:
    • Actively participate in continuous improvement activities to enhance packaging processes and materials.

Employment Requirements:

  • College diploma in a packaging program with a minimum of three (3) years of related experience.
  • Automotive experience is an asset.
  • Computer literacy along with strong organizational and communication skills is required.
