Videos Help Duties This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT for Bruce W Carter Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center looking for Registered Nurse(s) to work in the Nursing Service Operating Room (OR). It will remain open until June 4, 2024. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be March 28, 2024. Eligible applications received after this date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled. An Operating Room (OR) Nurse is responsible for the planning, execution, delivering, and evaluating both direct and indirect patient care of surgical patients. Duties range from preoperative to postoperative interventions and other tasks necessary to meet patient's needs throughout surgical procedures, thus ensuring patient safety and continuity of care during the surgical experience. The OR RN in the circulating role coordinates the care of the patients, serves as the patient's advocate throughout the intraoperative experience, and has responsibility for managing and implementing activities outside the sterile field. Activities are directed toward assuring patient safety and achieving desired patient outcomes. The nursing process is used as a framework for these activities. Other duties include but are not limited to: * Providing emotional support to the patients prior to the induction of anesthesia * Performing ongoing assessment * Formulating nursing diagnosis * Developing and implementing a plan of care * Documenting patient care to accurately reflect patient status and patient care activities * Evaluating patient outcomes * Teaching patient and family * Obtaining appropriate surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment * Creating and maintaining safe environment * Assisting a surgeon with surgical positioning * Administering medications * Implementing and enforcing policies and procedures that contribute to patient safety, such as surgical checklists, "time- out" protocols, surgical counts for instruments, sharps, and soft goods, and performing equipment checks * Preparing and disposing of specimens * Communicating relevant information to other team members and to patients' family * Entering and maintaining data related to implants and medical devices used during a surgical procedure * Handling and maintaining Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) * Providing instructions, guidance, and supervision to surgical technicians and nursing assistants * Role models safe and effective practices * Appropriate use of safe patient handling equipment * Adheres to infection control practices while using equipment and providing patient care * Follows established SOP's and checklists in the set-up, cleaning, transporting, and storing reusable medical equipment (RME) * Safely utilizes and maintains VA property and equipment The OR RN in the scrub role is responsible for the following duties: * Obtaining instruments, equipment, and supplies appropriate for the surgery * Preparing the sterile field and setting up the sterile table(s) * Maintaining the integrity and sterility of the sterile field throughout the procedure * Having knowledge of the procedure and anticipating surgeon's needs throughout the procedure * Providing instruments, sutures, and supplies to surgeon in appropriate and timely manner * Preparing sterile dressings * Implementing procedures that contribute to patient safety, such as surgical counts * Cleaning and preparing instruments for transport to decontamination area VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package: VA Nurse Total Rewards Pay: Competitive salary, regular salary increases, potential for performance awards Paid Time Off: 50 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory Work Schedule: 12 Hour Shifts, including weekends. Qualifications Basic Requirements: * English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. * Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR * Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). * Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)
