THE ORGANIZATION


A private nonprofit organization founded in 1973, Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) is a large agency that is part of the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) nationwide network. Founded as a result of the federal Older Americans Act, the AAAs are mandated to facilitate the area-wide development and implementation of a comprehensive, coordinated system for providing long-term care in home and community-based settings, in a manner responsive to the needs and preferences of older individuals and their family caregivers. PCA carries out this mission through advocacy, stewardship of public funding, planning, development and administration of programs, and service coordination.

Requirements:

Description of Role: Under the supervision of the PCA Community Relations Manager, the Community Relations Outreach Coordinator is responsible for increasing access to the aging system for ethnically diverse elders and their caregivers. The first objective is to strengthen relationships between PCA and health care providers, other service providers, community groups, older adults, and their caregivers. The Coordinator will link ethnically diverse communities to PCA and other aging programs, benefits, and entitlements. The Coordinator will facilitate social service delivery to the target populations by providing information and referral, advocacy, training, and technical assistance. The second objective is to provide outreach, assistance, support, and collaboration with leaders of various ethnically diverse communities for the purpose of increasing access to resources and services for this population.


Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in a relevant area (Social Work, Gerontology, or related Social Science) or equivalent education and experience. At least three years of experience working in community outreach, preferably with the aging and ethnically diverse communities. Working knowledge of aging services preferred.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Receive referrals from community organizations and community leaders. Act as a service broker between PCA and other service providers.
  • Educate target populations about PCA and aging network programs. Advocate for older adults to improve service access to aging programs.
  • Make presentations at community organizations. Speak about PCA services and other aging programs and services. Represent PCA at health fairs, other community events, and at media opportunities.
  • Educate PCA employees for them to have a better understanding of the needs of the elderly in ethnically diverse communities. Serve as chair of PCA's Latino Advisory Council. Plan quarterly council meetings. Facilitate PCA's Latino Conference Planning Committee meetings.
  • Assist in planning of meetings, conferences and other events that improve communication and serve as a bridge between the Latino community and access to aging services.
  • Keep PCA and other agencies in the aging network updated about relevant written materials that are appropriate for ethnically diverse communities.
  • Maintain accurate written records and prepare required written reports for PCA and other sources.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Network with community partners and increase flow of community referrals to PCA, aging network agencies and health care providers.
  • Improve awareness of aging services in ethnically diverse communities.
  • Increase sensitivity of PCA and the aging network to the needs of elders in ethnically diverse communities.
  • Improve quality/quantity of services to target populations.


Job Requirements:

  • Fluent in English and Spanish.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to work with, and sensitivity to, those of varying ethnic diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent verbal communication skills including public speaking.
  • Able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with external partners such as referral sources and community leaders.
  • Self-motivated able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong advocacy skills and dedicated to improving consumer service.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills willing to share ideas for program and/or service improvement.
  • Extremely organized with ability to multi-task effectively.
  • Excellent administrative skills including planning and scheduling meetings and conferences.
  • Strong written communication and computer skills.
  • Team player working cooperatively within Community Engagement department and with other PCA departments.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of target community as many outreach opportunities are scheduled beyond regular working hours.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
