Organizational Overview


Grow Public Schools (GPS), founded by the Grimm Family Education Foundation opened its doors in August 2011.  Located in Arvin, California, Grow Academy is an independent public charter school where health and wellness is at the center of student success.  Grow Academy implements a rigorous blended learning model where students actively engage in a unique, diversified learning environment in our Learning Lab, music program, physical education, and Edible Schoolyard (ESY) program.  


In 2016, Grow Public Schools (GPS), formerly Grimmway Schools, was established as the Charter Management Organization (CMO) responsible for support and management of the academies.  Today, GPS is redefining academic excellence in Kern County as a multi-campus charter school operator.  GPS operates Grow Academy (GA) Arvin, and GA Shafter, both TK-8 schools with over 800 students.  We hold high expectations for our students, parents, teachers, and staff to ensure a supportive and successful learning environment to close the opportunity gap in some of the highest need communities in California.


Summary Description:    The On-Call Classified Substitute will work on an as-needed basis to cover Cafe Aide, Custodian, After School Aide and Recess Coach roles, under the supervision of the appropriate team leads. As a substitute for the Cafe Aide role, the On-Call Substitute will perform a variety of duties related to food preparation, service and general maintenance in the kitchen and dining area. In the Custodian role, the Substitute will perform routine and ongoing custodial maintenance of the Academy. In the Recess Coach and After School Aide roles the substitute will ensure the safety of all children in the school while leading activities and/or assisting in homework. 


Duties and Responsibilities*:   


Varies according to role the substitute is covering that day*


  • Assisting in reinforcing student behavioral expectations throughout the day
  • Supervising students in the yard during recess
  • Supervising students in the cafeteria during lunch


  • Maintains clean serving areas and sets up cafeteria for timely service
  • Peels, slices, cores and dices vegetables and fruits by hand or using such mechanical equipment as automatic peelers, slicers and dicers
  • Follows state and federal regulations regarding food handling, serving and cleanliness
  • Washes dishes; cleans and scrubs pots and pans
  • Sweeps and mops floors in kitchen and dining area


  • Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools as needed
  • Lock and unlock assigned buildings; secure buildings when facilities are not in use, checking for unlocked doors and windows; turn off lights
  • Keep grounds free from trash and litter
  • Know and follow all safety rules and proper procedures associated with the responsibilities of the job


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:


  • Ability to read and follow all food safety and physical safety rules
  • Strong communication skills especially when interacting with school age children
  • Exceptional personal hygiene
  • Ability to lift, bend, stoop and carry heavy trays and packages of food and supplies  

 

Experience Required:  Demonstrated skill and experience in the preparation and serving of food, or custodial/maintenance,  especially in an elementary school setting a plus

-Must have or be willing to obtain a Serve Safe Food Handler’s certification.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:


  • Ability to stand, stoop, reach, and bend. Mobility of arms to reach, dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate large and small objects
  • Ability to stand for long periods and walk long distances
  • Ability to lift, push and/or pull objects (up to approximately 50 pounds unassisted and up to approximately 100 pounds assisted)
  • Ability to read small print
  • Ability to work with and in the proximity of equipment with moving mechanical parts
  •  Ability to work in a physically demanding environment
  • Ability to work around loud noise
