Job Summary:

To build and/or repair all types, sizes and shapes of plastic blow molds including assembling.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate Bridgeport type mills.
  • Smooth and clean inner surfaces of molds, using brushes, scrapers, air hoses, grinding wheels and fill imperfections with refractory material.
  • Measure and visually inspect products for surface and dimension defects to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments.
  • Regulate pressure, temperature, speed and feed rates and set cycle times.
  • Fit and assemble mold parts, tools and dies.
  • Drill, countersink and ream holes in parts and assemblies for bolts, screws, and other fasteners using power tools.
  • Cut, shape and form metal parts using manual drill press, lathes, power saws, snips, files, sand blasters, surface grinders and mallets.
  • Water test and inspect molds to produce a product meeting specifications.
  • Plans the setup and operation of various machine shop tools, considering types of material tolerances and machine tool feeds and speeds.
  • Uses precision measuring and gauging tools, performing required inspections before, during and after machining.
  • Maintain a high degree of cleanliness, organization, quality and safety.
  • Recognize defective tooling, machine malfunctions and dimensional deviations.
  • Detects and reports defective materials or questionable conditions to maintenance or management.
  • Read and interpret quality information instructions.
  • Communicate with co-workers regarding mold work.
  • Read, interpret and record data on required documentation for quality assurance.
  • Proceed on work assignments with minimum supervision and assistance.
  • Identify areas and make recommendations where changes can be made to improve safety, methods, part quality, machine and tooling performance and productivity.
  • Assist machinists in blow molding re-work.
  • Assist product designers by providing information about potential manufacturing difficulties with new product designs.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Technical school training preferred.
  • Knowledge of terminology related to equipment, methods, tooling, gauging, etc.
  • Previous manufacturing and polishing experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work accurately in a fast paced environment to meet quality and quantity quotas.
  • Ability to operate one or more machines to produce parts as directed.
  • Ability to train, instruct and assist trainees through the training period.
  • Demonstration of proficiency in shop math, basic reading, writing and print reading.
  • Ability to conduct tests and inspections of product.
  • Demonstration of a strong work ethic and is a self-starter.
  • Use of logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to determine causes of operating errors.
  • Ability to adhere to structured work guidelines and schedules.
  • Ability to read and follow visual cues.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses and maintenance.
  • Ability to follow written and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to work individually and as a team.
  • Ability to give operating instructions.
  • Use of judgment to plan, perform, and make decisions as to the sequence of set ups and processes within the limitation of recognized or standard methods and procedures.
  • Ability to control operations of equipment.

Work Environment:

Office / Warehouse environment. Employee may be occasionally exposed to moving equipment, mechanical parts in motion, risk of shock and other hazards associated with a manufacturing environment such as overhead cranes, welding, machining, painting etc.
