Fifty years ago today, in 1973, the Columbia Hospital and Clinics Foundation opened and was celebrated as the first hospital in the county. Built on former farmland, the original facility was created to serve the patients of the Columbia Medical Plan. Before the hospital even opened, however, the local medical community realized the need for a full-service hospital and in 1974, the facility was turned over to a community-based board of trustees and became a private, not-for-profit institution. The name was changed to Howard County General Hospital. The medical center will offer the same services under the new name, with the goal of further expanding Johns Hopkins specialty care in the future.

While the new buildings, equipment and technology play an important role, the people truly have made the hospital the caring presence it is today. From dietary assistants to nurses to physicians and board members, their experiences are woven into our fabric.

The nurses at JHHCMC love what they do! They love supporting the community and we always are looking for healthcare professionals who are seeking to find a home.
