Patrol Sergeant

The Rockdale Police Department is seeking a dynamic Police Sergeant to assume command of patrol operations in the absence of command staff, supervise police officers, and department employees in the fulfillment of their daily duties. The City of Rockdale offers the following employment benefits:

The police sergeant's responsibilities, in addition to the duties of a police officer, include the performance of administrative staff duties, briefing and training staff with regard to new developments, regulations, and techniques, conducting performance evaluations, and enforcing agency policies and regulations.

To be successful as a police sergeant you should be able to perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities and establish a relationship of trust among the members of your department. An outstanding police sergeant should be able to lead by example and confidently assume command when necessary.

Function Description / Patrol Sergeant
• Supervise evening/night patrol operations and enforce municipal, state, and federal criminal statutes, works weekends, and holidays; may be required to work extended shifts; and will be subject to emergency callout
• Supervises staff as assigned, including training, coaching, and motivating employees
• Conduct initial criminal investigations
• Gather information and complete timely and accurate reports
• Respond to calls for service
• Make arrests as necessary
• Review/approve patrol reports for accuracy
• Effectively communicate needs of patrol division to department administration
• Conduct monthly patrol vehicle inspections
• Operate Multi-Function Radio
• Monitors radio frequencies of field response personnel
• Multi - Tasking
• Monitor jail inmates and ensure all court paperwork is complete for all arrestees
• Conduct with shift briefings, training, and performance evaluations
• Educate staff about policy changes and new police technology or methods
• Conduct inspections of personnel and equipment
• Enforce strict adherence to policies and procedures
• Perform data entry of logs and records regarding officer activities, including traffic stops, suspicious vehicles, people, and incidents, ensuring officer safety
• Testify as a witness in trials or formal hearings, and provides trial assistance to lead attorney as requested
• Assist the general public with questions in person and over the phone, giving direction when needed
• Perform other work-related duties as assigned
• Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity
Required Qualifications
• High School diploma or GED
• Current TCOLE Intermediate Peace Officer Certification
• Minimum of five years of combined law enforcement experience
• Possess current Texas Driver’s License
• Ability to pass all department firearms qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
• Three or more years of experience in command staff or line supervisor position overseeing law enforcement personnel and operations
• TCOLE Instructor Certification
• Intoxilyzer Operator Certification
• Experience in conducting criminal investigations
• Ability to operate Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, power point, etc.
