                                                                                                    Group Manager - Structures

Job Summary:

                Group Managers shall closely monitor and work with Colleagues, Project Managers, Field Supervision, Clients, Customers and Associates to remove job obstacles and construct a successful project. Group Managers must display professionalism, integrity and courtesy to owners, tradesmen, vendors, architects, engineers, inspectors and MBC staff to achieve goals.

Work Hours:       8:00 to 5:00 M-F or as required to plan and organize work, attend meetings, travel and perform job duties.

Report to:           Vice President – Public Const.

Goals:                  

  • Safety FIRST in all agendas, meetings and planning of any and all activities.
  • Utilize and adapt to MBC Strategic Plan.
  • Aggressively pursue new work opportunities/clients in order to expand MBC Client base and revenue to meet Public/Private Construction Strategic Objectives.
  • Develop positive relationships with client base while modeling our Core Values.
  • Keep all employees involved, while constantly communicating the plan & goals while encouraging & developing teamwork consistent with our core values.
  • Know, Communicate and Support Company Policy.
  • Represent the Company in a positive and professional manner.

Job Responsibilities:                     

  • Compile, review and discuss Site Specific Safety and Emergency Action Plans for each project while utilizing the MBC Safety Managers prior to, during, and after construction is complete.
  • Know, communicate and enforce MBC’s Corporate Safety Plan and Policies and perform Safety Inspections as required while also communicating and enforcing OSHA requirements.
  • Learn the project; know the project scope, plans and specifications better than the customer.
  • Get involved as early as possible in the life of the project.
  • Review contract documents for scope, risk and dollars.
  • Assign Estimating responsibilities and monitor progress of the estimates prepared.
  • Schedule Estimate reviews, monitor DBE participation, and closeout/submit all estimates.
  • Estimate and determine optimum bid margins for the project/client in conjunction with the V.P. of Public Construction.
  • Negotiate and review contracts, subcontracts and purchase orders with clear scopes, schedules and terms to limit MBC’s liability.
  • Oversee and ensure that extra work is documented and followed through in order to maximize opportunities permitted by the contract while also ensuring the extra work is communicated to all stakeholders.
  • Monitor job profitability and use all company resources to ensure profitable projects while limiting loss.
  • Oversee and analyze job costs, review & evaluate project profitability (Estimated Cost at Completion) on a monthly basis and attend/participate in Monthly Financial Meetings.
  • Prepare annual Group budget (internal & external) and track expected group revenue projections. Attend/present at annual Group Budget Meetings.
  • Attend and participate in monthly Manager Meetings.
  • Schedule and perform Operational Meetings amongst the Structures Group to ensure communication objectives are present.
  • Attend annual Construction Kickoff event and lead a Structures Group breakout session.
  • Oversee and encourage participation in developing a project schedule and bridge submittals.
  • Monitor/coordinate contract invoicing and receivables to maximize cash flow for MBC.
  • Schedule and lead the following; seasonal start-ups and wrap-ups, schedule/coordinate winter form work/cleanup, project pre-construction meetings, interim project reviews (when feasible) and post job critiques as required.
  • Communicate the project schedule, work plan and reach consensus on needed resources, for the company’s overall best interest and efficiencies while working to eliminate communication gaps amongst the team.
  • Work with the Structures General Supt. to organize work activities to maximize labor, equipment, and materials on the project in order to maintain or beat the project schedule in an efficient and cost effective manner while also developing and providing opportunities for advancement amongst key identified personnel.
  • Monitor employment needs. Lead and participate in interviews, hires, and terminations for critical personnel while developing a team that embodies our core values.
  • Monitor Cranes for utilization and timing for sale and replacement in conjunction with MBC Equipment Dept.
  • Networking at various events in and around Northwest Ohio, Central Ohio, Northwest Indiana and Southeast Michigan.
  • Schedule and lead annual performance reviews.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering or Civil Engineering
  • 10 years construction experience in the Heavy Highway Construction Industry (knowledge of Bridge Construction is a plus)
  • Minimum of 3-5 years estimating experience
