*Bureau of School Health and Support, School Health Services, Contractual, 10 Month Positions*

Under the supervision of the appropriate Program Supervisor, this is the professional health services (school nurse) component of the pupil services team. Functions as liaison between the Anne Arundel County Department of Health, Anne Arundel County Public Schools, one or more designated schools, the student and his/her family, and the students health care provider. Provides appropriate health services, supervision of delegated nursing tasks, counseling and resources referral to students, parents and staff at assigned schools during the school year.

*General Statement of Work: *

The school nurse (RN) provides appropriate health services at assigned school(s) under the direct supervision of a program supervisor. This includes supervision of ancillary staff; supervision of delegated nursing tasks; counseling and resource referral assistance to students, parents and staff; case management of chronic disease; health teaching, home visiting, and participation in mandated screening programs and as a member of school and IEP teams. Functions as a liaison between the Anne Arundel County Department of Health and Anne Arundel County Public Schools, the student and his/her family, and the student’s health care provider. Based on assignment, other specialized duties may be assigned and work hours may fluctuate and go beyond regular school hours to meet the medical needs of the students and the program.

*Duties and Responsibilities:*

1. Provides illness and injury assessment, treatment and prevention.

2. Identifies and assesses health conditions of students by reviewing student education records. 3. Provides chronic disease management and education.

4. Identifies the need for home visits and conducts a comprehensive visit.

5. Participates as crisis team member.

6. Acts as liaison to assigned school, community, health care providers, students and their families.

7. Participates as member of the schools teams and assists with the development of IEP/504 plans.

8. Responds quickly to medical emergencies in the school building and school grounds, which may include running and/or carrying emergency medical equipment to response location, 9. Performs emergency medical care to students/staff as needed.

10. Collaborates with students, parents, healthcare providers, and school personnel in the case management of students who have been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury in the school setting,

11. Monitors immunization status including reviewing immunization record, documenting immunizations in student education records, and provides follow up for compliance with COMAR.

12. Provides communicable disease surveillance, reporting, and management. 13. Provides nursing procedures such as gastrostomy tube feedings, catheterizations, diabetes care, and medication administration.

14. Assists in the provision of health screenings for vision and hearing,

15. Provides consultation and direct assistance as required to protect the health of school population.

16. Obtains physician orders for procedures and medications to be given at school. 17. Interprets Department of Health services and state and local policies pertinent to children in schools.

18. Provides health information and education including in-service training, to students, school personnel and parents.

19. Provides annual mandated trainings to school personnel on various health topics including but not limited to; sickle cell disease, diabetes, asthma, and anaphylaxis.

20. Maintains current knowledge of health care providers, facilities, agencies and services for purpose of referral to appropriate resources.

21. Fulfills agency responsibilities for maintenance of adequate student records, periodic written and statistical reporting and program interpretation as necessary.

22. Maintains confidentiality of information, including understanding the minor consent statue, and providing appropriate record management.

23. Collects and submits mandated health information.

24. Attends mandated trainings.

25. Provides nursing services at other than assigned schools if required to fulfill programmatic needs.

26. Assists students with activities of daily living, which may include lifting up to 50 lbs.

27. Maintains confidentiality of information and provides appropriate record management.

28. Maintains current knowledge, skill and competency in school nursing practice.

29. Maintains current Maryland licensure as Registered Nurse.'
