Job Description
Maintains care and health needs of the animals at the AFB PARC facility. Employee is responsible for daily tasks associated with animal husbandry and health needs. Uses Veterinary Technician knowledge to assess animal health needs and follow Vet Services guidelines with respect to PARC policies and processes. Employee is dual function by having daily responsibilities related to animal care and health needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Provides compassionate care as a top priority for all animals
Contributes to the animal health program at PARC utilizing experience and knowledge as a Veterinary Technician
Provides surgical assisting responsibilities including anesthesia charting and monitoring, preparation and sterilization of tools, and operation and maintenance of equipment
Collects biological samples and aids in diagnostics such as physical examinations, digital radiology, and laboratory procedures including bloodwork, fecal analysis, urinalysis, culture, and cytology
Provides nursing care to sick/injured animals including but not limited to wound care and bandaging, oxygen administration and IV catheter placement and fluid administration
Communicates with the Veterinarian regarding animal health concerns, medication dosages and administration, medical treatments and nursing care
Calculates dosages and administers medication as well as provides treatment to facility animals as needed
Conducts daily facility animal checks/rounds
Dispenses and documents monthly medications including controlled substances regulated by the DEA
Maintains legal documents such as all medical records along with any DEA and USDA required paperwork relating to Vet Services as a whole or to individual patients at the PARC facility
Utilizes the AviMark veterinary software program functionalities relating to electronic medical records, appointments and booking
Serves as the Animal Health Technician on staff or on call for the facility
Educates other employees on the medical needs of animals at the PARC facility
Assists with the acquisition of new facility animals including documentation and animal health assessments
Creates and/or revises Standard Operation Procedures (SOP's) and Standard of Work (SOW) instructions related to animal health
Assists with inventory,utilizingthe KanBan systems currently in place
Ensures that kennel areas are clean, orderly and safe for animals
Feeds and provides water to animals as scheduled and according to guidelines
Exercises/socializes animals daily and abides by exercise and enrichment programs in place for each dog/cat
Provides daily observations on the animals and documents necessary informationthat needs communicated tomanagement or the veterinary staff
Ensures the comfort and cleanliness of all animals providing routine grooming care
Assists in completion of facility housekeeping
Advises Supervisor of any conditions that are unsafe including unrecognized hazards or infractions of safety rules

Education/Experience
Associates of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology degree
Two years' experience in a veterinary environment required.

* Ability to assess animal health conditions and to perform routine diagnostics commonly utilized in the veterinary medical field
