GENERAL SUMMARY:
Performs a variety of histologylaboratory procedures used to produce tissue slides, which aids the pathologistin diagnosis and recommended treatment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Performs all steps in the preparation of tissue for diagnosis by apathologist. Examine tissue structuresand characteristics as appropriate for patient age to include neonates,infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults.
* Performs preventative maintenance and basic trouble shooting of instrumentationand equipment.
* Performs all steps in the recycling of reagents.
* Files blocks and slides.
* Assists with selection of new instruments or method evaluation,implementation, and training.
* Assists and supports quality management systems and performanceimprovement initiatives.
* Utilizes LEAN principles/productivity standards.
* Trains new employees.
* Maintains supply inventory.
* Operates laboratory information systems, personal computers, andinstrument-related computer software.
MARGINALFUNCTIONS:
* Assists Pathologist in preparation of frozen sections.
* Performs charge duties as delegated by supervisor/manager.
* Takes waste chemicals to storage area for disposal.
* Acts as a technical resource for the client services and specimenprocessing team.
* Provides assistance to other laboratory team members.
* Serves on hospital and laboratory committees as approved bysupervisor/manager.
MINIMUMKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
* Bachelor's degreefrom an accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours(45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both).
* Successfulcompletion of an accredited histotechnician or histotechnology program OR one full year acceptable experiencein a histopathology laboratory.
* Certification as a Histotechnologist HTL (ASCP) is required.
* Must successfully complete the certification exam within six (6) monthsof hire.
