Job Overview:

The Vice President, User Experience, helps define a user experience vision and corresponding strategy that will allow Macy’s customers to shop seamlessly and easily across digital and physical channels and help Macy’s (and Bloomingdales) deliver the brand promise of fashion and affordable luxury. This person will develop and lead a team of roughly 40 user experience architects, researchers and strategists accountable for experience strategy, research, definition, execution and measurement of products and accompanying services online and in store. This person will have a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with leaders in several business units, technology, product, creative, marketing, merchandising, and stores to achieve the vision and drive business results. This individual will also be responsible for challenging and optimizing existing growth and innovation processes to help define an even better future for Macy’s. Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

The Vice President of User Experience and Strategy’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Digital User Experience Research and Design Oversight

• Serve as a leading voice of the user and act as a user experience advocate in considering digital decisions that will impact the customer and associates

• Ensure that conceptual designs and wireframes meet high standards and business goals for quality

• Champion a point-of-view to leadership regarding the relative importance of various initiatives that are ready to move to the development phase

• Support and guide the broader team as they ideate, collaborate, and design new experiences for in the digital ecosystem

• Define and measure metrics to track user experience both overall and specific to strategic development

• Develop, refine, and guide team through transition to leaner UX design practices

Digital Product and Experience Strategy / Innovation Pipeline

• Experience/expertise in high-level product strategy

• Comfortable/work-through ambiguity, articulate a point of view and contribute to a high-quality end result

• Highly data-informed and analytical, understand/demonstrate how data can shape/guide design decisions

• Establish, maintain, socialize, and measure an actionable digital product strategy that maximizes the organizations digital potential

• Identify and source new opportunities to innovate on the digital customer experience and bring this innovations to market via new and existing pipelines

• Lead the organization through the culture changes and best practices required to drive doing more, better, faster

People Leadership

• Coach User Experience and Strategy Directors, Managers and Leads as they develop their own teams and own product/experience domain visions, roadmaps, and conceptual designs

• Develop, lead and inspire the broader User Experience team members, each responsible for defining and delivering ecommerce research and user experience design

• Create and foster career development and growth paths for team members in alignment with company, product and personal objectives

• Create clear and measurable goals and objectives for the team related to the creation and enhancement of timely, high-quality products that support critical business objectives, requirements change management, and partnership with cross-functional teams

• Raise awareness of team’s plans, insights and accomplishments in order to facilitate cooperation across departments and to build a highly performing, highly motivated team

• Assist direct reports with ongoing prioritization and resource allocation to ensure that the crucial business initiatives are delivered

• Hiring, retention, and succession planning

Functional/Organizational Development

• Lead User Experience and Strategy efforts in developing and implementing scalable processes and/or tools to enable functional productivity

• Support senior leadership and the technology organization in developing and improving product development, product management and project management practices

• Continue to develop the role of User Experience, Usability Testing, Research and the User Centered Design process within Macy’s

• Extend the User Experience discipline to more and more digital and physical touch points (stores, internal tools, etc.)

• Continue to drive employee engagement by identifying and removing critical organizational blockers required to deliver against the value of the product management and user experience organizations

• Lead the alignment of best practices and engagement models for product management and user experience across all Macy’s brands

Consistently demonstrates regular, dependable attendance & punctuality

Qualifications:

Education/Experience

• 10-15 years relevant professional experience required

• 7-9 years of experience in more than one of the following areas: user experience, information architecture, creative design, and product strategy

• Internet and retail experience strongly preferred

• 7-10 years of leading & managing a large UX team focused in the enterprise products/solutions space

Communication Skills

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to read, write, and interpret business and technical documents

Other Skills

• Strong analytical, prioritization and negotiating skills

• Usability and customer-focused design experience a plus

• Experience developing delivery models a plus

• Experience developing and managing innovation pipelines a plus

• Passionate about building great products and solving customer and business problems

• Strong leadership profile and excellent negotiation skills
